Pina

Pina is nevertheless a triumph, a movie that does more than demolish the invisible wall between film and dance; it breaks the barrier that intervenes, even at a live performance, between seat and stage. I saw one of the pieces chosen for the film, Vollmond, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2010, and from where I was sitting?in a budget-wise corner of the balcony?the action was shrunken down and flattened out. It looked like what it was: a bunch of people cavorting in a pool of water, some others playing with chairs, and a couple of guys clambering onto and off of a large rock. (I left during an endless standing ovation, as unmoved as I'd been two years before, while falling asleep at Bausch's Bamboo Blues.) But in the movie version, I got to see it from front-row center, and also from the 10th row stage-left, and from stage-right, and from the stage itself?right next to the boulder and under the sprays of water. Stunts that had seemed frivolous in person?hey, I'm stacking some chairs over here?were now soaked in meaning.

Razer Blade gaming laptop delayed until mid-to-late January due to SSD upgrade

Eagerly waiting to get your hands on that nearly $3,000 Razer Blade gaming laptop? Then we're afraid we've got a bit of bad news. Razer confirmed this week on its Facebook page that the initial batch of shipments have been delayed until mid-to-late January (much like the also-delayed Tiamat gaming headset). That's due to a last-minute hard drive upgrade from the standard 320GB HDD to a 256GB SSD -- a switch that Razer says it's been able to do without increasing the $2,799 list price, but which it can't do without incurring a delay (it promises it'll be worth it). To keep the peace with gamers, Razer says it will gladly throw in a free Razer Orochi Blade Edition gaming mouse with your Blade laptop order -- details on receiving it can also be found on the company's Facebook page linked below.

Prince Harry says he is returning to Afghanistan

Britain's Prince Harry was quoted Wednesday as confirming he will be deployed to Afghanistan for a second time ? almost four years after his previous secret mission was cut short when details leaked.

The Sun newspaper reported that the 27-year-old, who is third in line to the British throne, told guests at a military awards ceremony on Monday night that he would likely return next year.

"I can't wait to get out there," the newspaper quoted Harry as saying.

Harry served as a battlefield air controller in Afghanistan for 10 weeks from Dec. 2007, but was sent home early after details were made public ? first by an Australian celebrity magazine and later on the Drudge Report website.

    1. Pining for Christmas past: Why we get nostalgic

Holidays bring holiday memories, and, often a sense of nostalgia for good times long gone, perhaps even loved ones long go...

    2. Prince William ... wipes some dirt off his shoulder?
    3. Giada's sweet and edible stocking stuffers
    4. Romance scams heat up for the holidays
    5. What's the best Christmas movie?

He became the first member of the British royal family to serve in a war zone since his uncle, Prince Andrew, flew as a helicopter pilot in the Falkland Islands conflict with Argentina in 1982.

Story: Prince Harry helps friend after London mugging

A spokesman for St. James's Palace, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, would not discuss the details of when or where Harry could serve in Afghanistan. He said it would be a "matter for the military chain of command."

Britain's defense ministry did not comment on Harry's potential deployment.

The prince returned to Britain in November after two months of combat helicopter pilot training in the United States.

Story: Prince Harry leaves the US, helicopter training complete

At the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, California, Harry flew Apache attack helicopters in the desert close to the Mexican border. During training at the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field in southern Arizona, the prince fired missiles and rockets.

During a brief break from maneuvers, the young prince rented a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Scottsdale and rode the six-hour trip to Las Vegas for a weekend visit.

Harry is currently completing his Apache helicopter training at British Royal Air Force base Wattisham Station, in eastern England.

The newspaper said the prince told awards ceremony guests he now hoped to utilize his months of training. "I'm looking forward to putting it into practice," it quoted him as saying.

In a speech to the ceremony, Harry told military colleagues of his admiration for them ? and for the families left behind when they are deployed.

"It's often said of our armed forces that they are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Well, I don't entirely buy that," Harry said. "Ordinary people don't put their lives on the line for distant folk, such as the Afghans, who need our help and are now turning their country around because of it."

Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, based mainly in the southern Helmand province. In a visit Tuesday, Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed about 500 U.K. forces will be withdrawn in 2012, ahead of the end of the international mission by the end of 2014.

Alabama Tornado Survivors Sought for Interviews

Public health agencies are looking to interview survivors of the killer tornadoes that hit north and central Alabama on April 27.

State Health Officer Don Williamson says the goal is to explore ways to lessen the loss of lives and property in future disasters. The state departments of Public Health and Mental Health are working on the project with the Centers for Disease Control.

They are asking storm survivors to call the state Department of Public Health at 1-855-228-3777 or enter their contact information online at the department?s website. Then they will be called back to schedule a phone interview of 20 to 30 minutes beginning Jan. 9.

Interviewers will be either Alabama college students or staff from the Centers for Disease Control.

Film details Jerry Lewis' 'Method to the Madness' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Gregg Barson is a documentarian, not a comedian. But when Jerry Lewis let him know that more than a dozen people were waiting in line to tell his story, Barson offered a persuasive punch line.

"Yeah, but they're not me," was Barson's comeback, followed by a momentary quiver of fear that he'd gone too far with the veteran star.

"He said, `I like that. You know why? Because you remind me of me,'" Barson recalled. That chutzpah-fueled exchange led to "Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis," debuting 8 p.m. EST Saturday on Encore.

The film focuses on what makes the 85-year-old ? and still working ? Lewis tick as a performer and filmmaker. Those looking for dish on his family life or breakup with stage and screen partner Dean Martin or abrupt departure from the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon he'd nurtured for six decades won't find it here.

Barson, who describes himself as "in heaven" when he caught a Lewis film on TV as a youngster, said his intent was to focus on Lewis' career from vaudeville on and his contributions to comedy and movies.

Younger people without exposure to Lewis' work likely consider him as "that telethon guy. Hopefully, the film will open their eyes as opposed to thinking he did one thing one day a year," Barson said.

During more than three years of filming, Barson had near-complete access as he followed Lewis from his yacht in San Diego to his home in Las Vegas to concert dates and to the Cannes Film Festival in France, the country that idolizes Lewis as a cinematic genius.

He was good company, Barson said. "He's always up, funny and playful. ... The sparkle, he didn't put in on for the camera. He's being real."

"Method to the Madness," which opens with Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy and other comedians anointing Lewis as comedy royalty, is an unabashed valentine. It is also a reminder that Lewis inspired rock-star levels of fan devotion, and of how impressively "The Bellboy" (1960) and many other films starring and written and directed by Lewis ruled the box office.

Barson, who made the well-received Phyllis Diller documentary "Goodnight, We Love You," sees parallels between Diller and Lewis, including their work ethic.

"She was 84 when she retired, and he's 85 and still working. They never rest on their laurels," Barson said. "They still care. They're not phoning it in."

And that, he said, is part of Lewis' method: Every aspect of his performance is planned.

"As Eddie Murphy says (in the film), slapstick looks simple but the reason it's been around so long is how well thought out it is," Barson said.

Lewis is pleased with the film. And his health is good, according to the filmmaker, who spills one appropriately quirky personal secret on his subject: "He drinks a lot of orange soda. Maybe that's the fountain of youth."
