New Hampshire Primary Brings Out Verbal Lashing from GOP Candidates (ContributorNetwork)

With less than 24 hours before the New Hampshire begins voting in the first primary of the election season, GOP candidates are targeting frontrunner Mitt Romney with television ads and stinging allegations.

Here is a breakdown of some of the comments made by Republican candidates:

* Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Associated Press he will step up his criticism of the former Massachusetts governor who he believes is not a true conservative candidate. The Saturday debate in New Hampshire was only the beginning of his attacks on Romney, Gingrich said. "I don't believe in unilateral disarmament. ... Mitt Romney cannot campaign with a straight face as a conservative."

* Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been campaigning in South Carolina, which will hold its primary on Jan. 21. Associated Press reported Perry chose to attack Romney's record as CEO of Bain Capital, including alleged layoffs that affected South Carolina workers. "I have no doubt that Mitt Romney was worried about pink slips -- whether he'd have enough of them to hand out."

* Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman has been campaigning throughout New Hampshire for months. A Suffolk University poll released Sunday placed Huntsman solidly in third place, according to US News and World Report. He received the endorsement of the Boston Globe last week. Huntsman largely focuses his campaigning on issues and positioning himself as the only electable Republican. In a rare comment about Romney, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Huntsman told a town hall meeting that Romney's successes so far won't work in New Hampshire. "In New Hampshire, you can't Twitter your way to success. You can't Facebook your way to success. Politics is still done the old-fashioned way in this state. You have to be seen. You have to be heard. You have to be felt."

* Texas Rep. Ron Paul has conceded Romney's huge lead in New Hampshire and, instead, told Time magazine he would focus on winning other voters, mainly from former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Campaign manager Jesse Benton has been leading the verbal attacks on behalf of the candidate. He mainly has been targeting Santorum's allegations that Paul would be ineffective as president. "Rick Santorum's fooling lot of people into thinking he's some sort of limited government conservative, [but] he's a big-government Republican who voted for a lot of debt and a lot of spending," Benton said.

Guggenheim proposes $178 million Helsinki museum (Reuters)

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? The Guggenheim wants to build a 140 million euro ($178 mln) museum on the Helsinki waterfront as it expands its satellite of contemporary art galleries to new locations such as Bilbao in Spain and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which oversees the original, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum in New York as well as four overseas sites, proposed that it and the Finnish capital jointly develop a new museum.

The Guggenheim chose Helsinki due to strong local interest and tradition in art and design, as well as the city's plans to develop its harbor properties, it said in a proposal announced on Tuesday.

"We were quite interested and excited by what we saw here - a population that is highly educated, which is very important for the success of the museum and for potential audience development," Ari Wiseman, the Guggenheim's deputy director, told Reuters.

Wiseman, along with city officials, presented the proposal at the landmark Finlandia Hall designed by Alvar Aalto, after a year-long feasibility study.

The Guggenheim also noted the city lacked a significant modern art collection, a gap it said the museum could fill and help draw tourists.

It proposed a museum be built on a city-owned site in Helsinki's south harbor, and recommended the city move forward with an architectural competition.

The museum could open in 2018 after around three years of development, it said, adding that its 140 million euro estimate includes the construction and design of the building. The museum would also need public, private and corporate funding to cover operating costs.

The city is due to decide in the next few weeks whether to go ahead with the project.

There?s a strange dynamic unfolding right now in Oakland, which probably shouldn?t come as much of a surprise to anyone who has followed the NFL for the last decade.? And there?s a theory making the rounds in league circles that the arrival of Reggie McKenzie as the team?s next General Manager could lead to the departure of coach Hue Jackson.

Even though both men are represented by Kennard McGuire, there are indications that Jackson wasn?t fully on board with the decision to hire McKenzie.? Jackson, whom we believe reports directly to owner Mark Davis, has been publicly candid (perhaps too candid) in recent days regarding his desire for more control.? It?s our understanding that, behind the scenes, Jackson has been even more candid, and that the arrival of McKenzie could ? not will but could ? result in Jackson being one and done in Oakland.

Would it be shocking?? Yes.? But not much more shocking than last year?s decision to part ways with Tom Cable after a far less expected 8-8 season.

Every G.M. wants to hire his own coach.? Even if the G.M. says as he walks through the door that he?s fine with the head coach who is in place, every G.M. wants to hire his own coach.? With Jackson seeming in recent days like a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to the management of the team, McKenzie could have some real misgivings about moving forward with Jackson.

The fact that McGuire represents both men will influence the situation, but that will go only so far.? At some point, McKenzie will have to make what he believes to be the right decision/recommendation for the franchise, even if it means potentially alienating his own agent by firing one of his agent?s other clients.

At this point, we?re not reporting that Jackson is on his way out or predicting that he?s not long for the job.? What we do know is that folks inside the league are keeping an eye on Oakland, because there?s a sense that McKenzie and Jackson possibly won?t be able to coexist.

Mark Stetter, who most recently has directed animal operations for the Walt Disney Co., will become the new dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University.

He will take over the position in May, replacing Lance Perryman, who is retiring after serving as dean since October 2001.

Stetter directed the care of thousands of animals at Disney properties worldwide and oversaw more than 500 employees in addition to working on the company's research and conservation programs. He also oversaw the proper use of animals at Disney-owned media outlets like ESPN, Disney Studios and ABC.

Stetter chairs the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians Reserach Committee and is a member of the American College of Zoological Medicine's executive board.

He also founded The Elephant Population Management Program, which helps African countries deal with elephant overpopulation and conservation. Prior to joining the Disney Co., Stetter's work included jobs as a veterinarian at such facilities as the Bronx and Central Park zoos and the New York Aquarium.

Prosecutors open case against Egypt's Mubarak (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptian prosecutors seeking a conviction against Hosni Mubarak on charges of ordering the killing of protesters took the stand for the first time on Tuesday, criticizing his political record in a session brought to an abrupt end by the presiding judge.

The head of the five-member prosecution team said Mubarak, 83, had succumbed to family pressure to arrange a transfer of power to his youngest son, Gamal, who stood alongside his father in a courtroom cage reserved for the accused.

A lawyer for the defense, Ismail Sha'er, speaking after the session was adjourned until Wednesday, said the prosecution had offered statements with "no basis in evidence."

Mubarak, toppled by a mass uprising in February last year, was again wheeled on a hospital trolley into the Cairo court. Doctors say he has a heart condition that means he cannot stand for any length of time.

The former president, his two sons, the former interior minister and senior police officers face charges ranging from corruption to involvement in the deaths of around 850 protesters during the uprising that unseated him.

"He agreed to succession and succumbed to the demands of his family and spouse who wanted to be mother to the next president after having been the wife of one," said Mustafa Suleiman, head of the prosecution team, presenting a view widely held among Egyptians and which helped galvanize the opposition to Mubarak.

In the first of three sessions set aside for the prosecution to present their case, Suleiman did not deal with the charge that Mubarak had ordered the killing of the demonstrators who rose up against him. Prosecutors said they would get to that part of their case Wednesday.

Judge Ahmed Refaat adjourned the session when Suleiman sought to give the floor to another member of the prosecution team. The session lasted about 90 minutes. Previous sessions have lasted several hours.

Mubarak, who ruled for three decades, is the first leader toppled by the wave of protests in the Arab world to stand trial in person.

"GRAND STATEMENTS WITH NO EVIDENCE"

In a country still in political and economic disarray following Mubarak's ouster, many Egyptians believe national renewal will be impossible unless justice is achieved for those killed and their families.

No official has been convicted over the killing of protesters during the 18-day revolt. Mubarak and the other defendants deny any responsibility for the deaths.

Ashraf Sayyed, a civil rights lawyer attending the hearing, said the prosecution had made "grand statements with no evidence ... Judge Refaat is giving the prosecutors' team more time to offer better and more solid arguments."

Some legal experts have criticized the judge for not meeting lawyers' requests for a further chance to question Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the military council which has governed Egypt since Mubarak stepped down.

Likewise, the judge did not meet their requests for the chance to question Tantawi's deputy, General Sami Enan.

"Unfortunately, the basis for this case is weak," said Essam Soltan, an independent legal expert.

"The judge could have demanded the testimony of Sami Enan before allowing the prosecutors to list their arguments. We have entered the next phase of the trial on the back of weak and insufficient evidence," he said.

"The reputation of Egypt's justice system is at stake. We are a year since the revolution erupted and not a single official has been convicted for the killing of Egyptians."
