BayBak, Azerbaijan | 4 hours ago | Saturday, 9th February , 2013 , 00:03 [am] | Azerbaijan

Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB), one of the world?s leading space technology companies, today announced that the company-built Azerspace/Africasat-1a commercial communications satellite was successfully launched into orbit on February 7, 2013 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. Lift-off took place at 4:36 p.m. (EST) and the satellite successfully separated from the rocket?s final stage approximately 37 minutes into the mission.

?Today is an historic day for the people of Azerbaijan. We?re proud to be the first among the South Caucus states to have a telecommunications satellite that will provide important communications services to Azerbaijan, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa,? said Elin Suleymanov, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States.

Orbital designed, built and tested the Azerspace/Africasat-1a satellite for the Azercosmos Open Joint Stock Company of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

?This satellite illustrates the important commercial relationship between U.S. industry and the Azerbaijani government. We appreciate the cooperation between The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the U.S. Import-Export Bank, and Orbital Sciences Corporation throughout this nearly three-year process. I would also like to thank the hundreds of Americans who worked to put this satellite in space. We look forward to working together on future projects as Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its communications infrastructure,? Ambassador Suleymanov concluded.

Commenting on the early status of the mission, Mr. Christopher Richmond, Orbital?s Senior Vice President of Communications Satellite Programs, said, ?The launch of Azerspace/Africasat-1a was flawless, and so far, the mission is operating smoothly. This is one of ten GEOStar-2 satellites that we are building and delivering to customers around the world over a two-year period, and the 30th such satellite the company has produced for commercial operators in the last 15 years. Global satellite operators continue to recognize us for our excellent track record of superior reliability and outstanding customer service. It is an honor to support Azercosmos with this satellite, which will expand Azerbaijan?s communications infrastructure and enhance its connectivity with other parts of the world.?

Over the next few weeks, Orbital will work with the Azercosmos engineering team to conduct in-orbit testing to verify all subsystems are operating as planned. Once testing is complete and the spacecraft is positioned at its 46* East Longitude orbital location, Orbital will turn over day-to-day operations of Azerspace/Africasat-1a to Azercosmos.

Satellite command and control operations will be carried out at control centers in Baku and Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. These facilities were designed and built by Azercosmos to support the installation of the ground control systems provided by Orbital, including ground antennas, radio-frequency electronics, computer platforms, and the software used to command, monitor and control the satellite.

Orbital designed, built and tested the Azerspace/Africasat-1a satellite in Dulles, VA at its satellite manufacturing and test facility. With an anticipated service life of 15 years, Azerspace/Africasat-1a is based on Orbital?s flight-proven GEOStar-2 platform. The hybrid C- and Ku-band satellite generates approximately five kilowatts of payload power and carries 36 active transponders, providing communications services to Azerbaijan, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Central Asia. It will operate from 46* East Longitude through an arrangement between Azercosmos and MEASAT Satellite Systems of Malaysia, which owns the rights to the orbital slot.

PFT: Ravens won't restructure deals to keep core

File photo of Buffalo Bills head coach Gregg WilliamsReuters

On his first day back in the NFL after being suspended for orchestrating the Saints? bounty program, new Titans assistant coach Gregg Williams said he accepts the blame for the mess he created in New Orleans, and that he vows to do things the right way going forward.

?I met with the commissioner last week and we had a good talk, and I thank him for my reinstatement back into the league,? Williams said. ?I take full responsibility and apologize for my previous actions and I?ve used this year to reorganize my life and put focus on positive energy and positive ways to inspire, and coach, and motivate in this profession. I?m here to put my focus and my energies into working tirelessly on behalf of the Titans and making as much of a positive impact in every way possible as I can for them. I?m grateful for this opportunity and I?m looking forward with excitement to get started.?

Williams said he spent a lot of his year away doing volunteer work.

?It was a great year to travel, I?ve spoken all over the country. I visited Thailand, worked with some impoverished villages, a lot of orphanages over there. I?m a sucker for kids,? Williams said. ?I spoke to many Pop Warner, junior high, high school and college programs over the country and I did that in a way that was trying not to focus any attention on me, but on the game.?

Williams has grown a goatee and mentioned that he has lost a lot of weight during his year off, and he stressed that he?s excited and energetic about joining head coach Mike Munchak?s staff. Munchak, too, said he was excited, noting that he and Williams first worked together on the Houston Oilers when Munchak was a player and Williams was an assistant, and that they?ve also been assistant coaches together on the Titans? staff.

?I?ve known Gregg for 20 years. In 1990, when Jack Pardee came over to the Oilers, coach Williams came with him as a quality control coach. I watched him work his butt off,? Munchak said of Williams. ?He made players better than they probably should be.?

Munchak, who mentioned that Williams is on a one-year contract, said he contacted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when he first got the idea that Williams could make a difference on his coaching staff.

?I called Commissioner Goodell and I talked to him about Gregg?s situation and he was very open about it,? Munchak said.

Williams said he was always confident that if he did the right things, he would get another chance to coach in the NFL. Now he has that chance in Tennessee.

5 Things Never to Say to Lesbian Moms | The Stir

gay prideIt never ceases to amaze me that when people encounter moms, their sense of tact goes right out the window. I've been asked the strangest and most insensitive questions in the years since I got pregnant -- most of them having to do with my decision to have an only child. But the questions I get have nothing on those that my lesbian mom friends encounter on an all-too-frequent basis.

In fact, when I asked a few lesbian mom friends what it's like out there for them, the answers were astounding. People are just plain RUDE!

Not sure if you've accidentally offended a lesbian mom? Check out the list of things you really should NOT be saying to these ladies:

1. Which one of you is the real mom? Well, that depends what you call a "real" mom. Is it the mom who reads bedtime stories? The mom who changes diapers? The mom who bandages scraped knees and kisses away boo boos? Because that's both of the moms in a lesbian relationship.

2. Who's the sperm donor/father? Sometimes there's a present dad, sometimes there isn't. Either way, if he's someone a lesbian couple wants to talk about, you'll know it when they're ready.?

3. How did you get pregnant? Some moms are comfortable talking about the process, and some aren't. Either way, it's best to stay out of a woman's uterus.

4. Aren't you worried that your kids will be queer? As writer, lesbian, and mom of two Shannon Cate told The Stir, "We are often put on the defensive about whether our kids are more likely to be queer themselves if we raise them. Many answers to this abound, the two most popular being: 1) research shows that the answer is no, 2) most queers were raised by heterosexual parents so this isn't a likely thing. But I am bothered by the fact that we answer in these ways. The answer should be, 'What if our kids WERE queer? What's wrong with that?'"

5. Which one of you is the dad? Neither! Lesbian moms may go by different names (mom and mommy, mama and mom mom, etc.), but they're still moms.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? John and Ann Betar weren't supposed to get married. Her father had arranged for her to wed another man, but she and John fled Bridgeport and eloped in New York.

That was more than 80 years ago. The couple is still happily hitched, a fact that has led to their naming as the "longest married couple" in the U.S. for 2013 by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a Christian marriage group based in San Bernardino, Calif.

The Betars are scheduled to receive a plaque and other gifts from the group at their granddaughter's home in Fairfield on Saturday.

They told the New York Daily News that there are no secrets to a long marriage, only a few simple rules.

"We just live with contentment and we don't live beyond our means," John Betar said. "Just go with the flow."

John's now 101 years old and Ann is 97, and they're still living in their home along the Fairfield shore. They had five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Two of their children died in their 60s.

Ron and Judy Pekny of Worldwide Marriage Encounter say the title of "longest married couple" is based on nominations the group received, so there may be some couples who have been married longer.

John and Ann grew up across the street from each other in Bridgeport, and John used to drive Ann to high school in his Ford Roadster. They fell in love. When her father arranged for her to marry someone else, they eloped in Harrison, N.Y., about 25 miles north of New York City.

John went on to open a grocery store in Bridgeport.

Ann Betar told the Hearst Connecticut Media Group around their 80th anniversary in November that family has been a key to their longevity.

"That's what makes life what it is," she said. "We were fortunate enough to live long enough to see this ... and it's really one of the most gratifying things in the world to see your great-grandchildren, to see your grandchildren become adults."

John Betar added, "That's what keeps us alive. We live for them."

Pacific locked in 'La Nada' limbo

Feb. 6, 2013 ? Sea-surface height data from NASA's Jason-1 satellite show that the equatorial Pacific Ocean is still locked in what some call a neutral, or 'La Nada' state. This condition follows two years of strong, cool-water La Niña events.

A new image, based on the average of 10 days of data centered on Jan. 26, 2013, shows near-normal conditions (depicted in green) across the equatorial Pacific. The image is available at: http://sealevel.jpl.nasa.gov/images/latestdata/jason/2013/20130126P.jpg .

This latest image highlights the processes that occur on time scales of more than a year, but usually less than 10 years, such as El Niño and La Niña. These processes are known as the interannual ocean signal. To show that signal, scientists refined data for this image by removing trends over the past 20 years, seasonal variations and time-averaged signals of large-scale ocean circulation.

The height of the water relates, in part, to its temperature, and thus is an indicator of the amount of heat stored in the ocean below. As the ocean warms, its level rises; as it cools, its level falls. Yellow and red areas indicate where the waters are relatively warmer and have expanded above normal sea level, while green (which dominates in this image) indicates near-normal sea level, and blue and purple areas show where the waters are relatively colder and sea level is lower than normal. Above-normal height variations along the equatorial Pacific indicate El Niño conditions, while below-normal height variations indicate La Niña conditions. The temperature of the upper ocean can have a significant influence on weather patterns and climate. For a more detailed explanation of what this type of image means, visit: http://sealevel.jpl.nasa.gov/science/elninopdo/latestdata/ .

"This past spring, after two years of La Niña, the expected El Niño was a no-show," says Bill Patzert, climatologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "La Niña faded and 'La Nada' conditions locked in."

"This absence of El Niño and La Niña, termed 'neutral' by some, has left long-range climate forecasters adrift," Patzert added. "Seasonal, long-range forecasting works best when signals like El Niño and La Niña are strong." Patzert calls the present condition 'La Nada,' because the word 'neutral' misleadingly implies to some that weather will be 'normal.'

"For me 'normal' is the cycle on a washing machine," Patzert said. "I never say the word 'normal' when it comes to winter weather in the American West. For instance, in the last 100 years, we've only had a total of six 'normal' years of rainfall in Los Angeles, meaning about 15 inches of rain per winter in downtown L.A. Historically, La Nadas have delivered both the wettest and driest winters on record. For long-range forecasters, La Nada is a teeth grinder." NASA scientists will continue to monitor this persistent La Nada -- now in its 10th month -- to see what the Pacific Ocean has in store next for the world's climate.

The comings and goings of El Niño, La Niña and La Nada are part of the long-term, evolving state of global climate, for which measurements of sea surface height are a key indicator. Jason-1 is a joint effort between NASA and the French Space Agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Jason-2 is a joint effort between NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, CNES and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). JPL manages the U.S. portion of both missions for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. In early 2015, NASA and its international partners CNES, NOAA and EUMETSAT will launch Jason-3, which will extend the timeline of ocean surface topography measurements begun by the Topex/Poseidon and Jason 1 and 2 satellites. Jason-3 will make highly detailed measurements of sea level on Earth to gain insight into ocean circulation and climate change.
