GOP congressman: If immigration reform doesn't stop immigration, it will kill the Republican Party

Republican congressman Raul Labrador on NBC's Meet the Press, explaining explaining why he opposes the Senate's immigration reform bill:
I actually think if we don?t do it right politically it?s going to be the death of the Republican Party. If we do it right, I think it?s going to be good for us. But if we don?t do it right, what?s going to happen is that we?re going to lose our base because we?re still going to have a large number of illegal immigrants coming into the United States. And the Hispanic community is not going to listen to us because they?re going to always listen to, at this point, to the people that are offering more, that are offering a faster pathway to citizenship, all those things. So, I think we lose on both grounds if we don?t do it right.
In other words, according to Labrador (who is, ironically, Hispanic): Republicans should oppose immigration reform unless it stops Hispanic immigration into the United States because Republicans don't have much to offer to Hispanics. Even if you set aside the crass nature of Labrador's political calculation on how his party should handle a question of basic human dignity, isn't it amazing that he seems oblivious to the fact that Republicans could do something about the fact that they are so unpopular with Hispanics? Instead, he?and his fellow conservatives?seem eager to make their problem even worse. (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load) (Load)

The optimism is great to see, but such occurrences here are rampant, and rather detrimental for a driver?s progress.?The past weekend Lamborghini Super Trofeo series held on June 28-30, 2013 at the Sepang International Circuit brought in new dynamics and upgrades. Two new Malaysian teams were welcomed this weekend with actor and singer Ryu Si-won from Korea. The other team saw for the first time two female drivers, Marina Sa from Indonesia and Mika Kagoshima from Japan. Super Trofeo Asia Series 2013 comes forth from Italian manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini along with Swiss watchmaker Blancpain.

Race 1 held on Saturday 29th June 2013 saw Kazushi Kitaura and Hideto Yasuoka from Japan in first place while Zen Low and Dilantha Malagamuwa of Malaysia and Sri Lanka respectively finished in second place. In third place were Shanghai Wiser/Xin. Super Trofeo storms Malaysia for more eye-catching and extraordinary performances in round 2

July 02, 2013, Sepang, Malaysia ? Lamborghini surged across the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur?s sun-bound Sepang on June 28-30, as new and exciting dynamics, new upgrades and a new diversity of gentlemen drivers took on the Sepang International Circuit.

Last year a new milestone in Lamborghini history was created at the Sepang International circuit, as it was this prestigious track chosen to launch the inaugural Super Trofeo Series in the Asian continent. After a spectacular start to this year?s season at the Shanghai International Circuit, this second round of the Super Trofeo Asia Series 2013, presented by the Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars Automobili Lamborghini and luxury Swiss watchmaker Blancpain, gave spectators an exhilarating performance.

This racing weekend brings Super Trofeo to a whole new level of diversity, welcoming two new Malaysian teams, the celebrated actor and singer Ryu Si-won from Korea, and for the first time ever two female competitors, Rally Marina Sa from Indonesia and Mika Kagoshima from Japan. Gentlemen drivers from Indonesia, who joined the race in four different cars, brought further thrills to the series.

Under tropical conditions and a track proceeded by name, gentlemen drivers entered the nerve-racking heat and blistering track features of the world renowned Sepang International Circuit. Following Friday?s 30 minute practice session, two 15 minute qualifying rounds to determine the rankings for this round preceded race 1, an endeavor for the best lap-time that aroused the racing vigor of every team competing.

In Race 1 on Saturday, Group A saw an epic performance from Kazushi Kitaura and Hideto Yasuoka (#10) from Japan, whom having climbed the positioning board with a mind for persistence and an eye on the podium, won them a well deserved first place. Home representing team Zen Low/Dilantha Malagamuwa (#69) of Malaysia and Sri Lanka triggered emotional excitement as they demonstrated extraordinary determination to finish in second place. After leading the starting grid following a tremendous best lap time in the qualifying rounds, victors from Shanghai Wiser/Xin (#9) finished third in this exciting first race.

In group B, drivers drifted in and out of pole position in a fierce contest for final victory that saw Andrea Garbagnati (#6) seize the overall victory. Taking to the podium for the very first time in this year?s championship were China?s Zheng Ting and Steven Lin (#66), whose second place victory was followed by Jeff Lu (#38) of Taiwan in third, who also made his glorious debut onto the podium.

Race 2 on Sunday saw an inspiring race performance from Group A fill the circuit with a gleaming sensation of pride as the champion emerged as Malaysia?s very own Afiq Yazid (#2), whose leading position throughout the majority of the race set uncompromising standards for the other drivers following eagerly behind. Marking their fourth consecutive podium finish in this year?s championship, highly successful team Wiser/Xin (#9) of China made an impressive return to the front to win second place. From Japan, Yakinori Taniguchi (#12) displayed remarkable determination and driving skills that won him third place and indeed his debut victory in the Super Trofeo Asia Series.

In Group B, quenching his continued thirst for success was Andrea Garbagnati, a victory hotly contested for by Xu Peng Kai and Zhang Zhen Dong (#7) from China, whose impressive skills throughout this tournament were justly rewarded with second place. After an impressive pursuit leading group B for quite some time, Han Lin and Hanss Lin of Taiwan (#36) demonstrated remarkable skills as they came in for a well earned 3rd place.

?The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia is a unique occasion to reinforce our presence in this region and to show our connoisseurs another universe of the brand? commented Marc A. Hayek, Presiden & CEO of Blancpain. ?This championship unites Haute Horlogerie and super car aficionados in a unique experience. Malaysia not only shares our passion for exceptional driving performances, but also a growing appreciation for luxury mechanical watchmaking, twin sources of enthusiasm that bring us closer to this valued market.? Cristiano Inverni, Coordinator of Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series, added ?It was fantastic to watch this second round in Malaysia and to revisit this remarkable circuit. The exclusive lifestyle demonstrated with Super Trofeo is an unmistakable gene of Lamborghini motorsport that puts the competing gentlemen drivers at the forefront of extraordinary racing.?

Along this complex track inexperienced by many, with five and a half kilometers of generously broad tarmac surfacing and 15 unforgettable turns, the anxiety of contestants was lifted with the 2013 Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo. In addition to its high safety components, firm traction and extraordinary handling abilities, this model enjoys a new aerodynamic kit, which after being severely put to the test, raises the stakes of this year?s series to a whole new level.

The VIP lounge was furnished today with the opulence of all things Lamborghini, as drivers, their families and friends indulged in the luxury Italian cuisine and overall ambience that shaped this ultimate lifestyle experience. Here, guests also enjoyed the exclusive company of Gallardo LP 560-4, whose provocative design and sophisticated workmanship illuminated the luxury dynamics of this model that lay adjacent to its racing derivative outside on the track. From Blancpain, a magnificent array of luxury timepieces was exhibited to provide an exclusive aura that filled the lounge with a further glow of uncompromising beauty.

On August 09-11, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series makes its way for the first time to Inje, Korea, where in the remote surroundings of the recently established and highly renowned Autopia Circuit will host the next race of this ultimate lifestyle experience. This will be the third event in the 2013 Super Trofeo Asia series, and marks not only the increasing development of Asia?s passion for luxury car racing, but succeeds the platform for uncompromising racing and excitement which drivers can now look forward to with immense enthusiasm.

Post-race Quotes:

Quote 1:
Zen Low Suan Chuan (#69): The pressure was a little high, this being my home town, and hundreds of my friends came to support me, all expecting me to do well. Fortunately, my partner knew the car very well and was able to keep a good positioning throughout. My qualification round wasn?t great, but the result turned out very well, thanks to my partner who pushed hard in this race.
Quote 2:
Rally Marina Sa (#24): As the first female driver in the race, it has been a truly wonderful experience. The temperature was hot, like being in a sauna, and I felt I didn?t have full concentration. When the race came on though, the car itself handled very well. I had to be patient with this track because high acceleration depended mainly on how I handled the many corners.

Two Chinese teenagers reportedly killed in Asiana jet crash

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 that burst into flames after it slammed into the runway at San Francisco airport on Saturday morning has left two Chinese middle school students killed and 182 passengers injured.

Based on information obtained from the boarding passes, two female middle school students from Jiangshan City, Zhejiang Province, died in the accident, but the identities of the victims have yet been confirmed by DNA tests.

The two girls were travelling with a group of middle school students and their teachers from Jiangshan on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 to take part in a summer camp in the United States.

Meanwhile, 30 students and six teachers from north China's Shanxi Province were aboard the same flight, the provincial education department said Sunday.

A total of 141 Chinese citizens were among the 291 passengers aboard the flight when the jumbo jet broke off its tail and caught fire before braking to a bumpy stop that gave time to most of the passengers to slide down the emergency doors.

A Chinese passenger that survived the crash recalled that the jet caught fire at around the 20th row inside the aircraft, so he believed that the seriously injured might be sitting before the 20th row.

"It is incredible and very lucky that we have so many survivors. But there are still many that are critically injured," said San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, who sent condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

Some 182 people were injured and have been sent to nine hospitals near the airport. Forty-eight people remained in serious condition, Lee told reporters.

The Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco has set up an emergency team to assist the Chinese passengers and coordinate with the local municipal government on the aftermath of the crash.

Asiana Airlines President Yoon Yong-doo bowed and apologized over the crash landing at a televised press conference on Sunday.

"I am bowing my head and extending my deep apology" to the passengers, their families and the South Korean people over the crash, he said.

The airline said it plans to launch a task force in Beijing to cope with the accident accordingly, but stopped short of confirming any casualties, except saying that the two Chinese victims were born in 1996 and 1997, respectively.

A spokesman for Asiana Airlines said the two killed Chinese teenagers were seated at the back of the plane.

San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the the two killed were found on "the exterior" of the plane.

Boeing expressed concern over the accident and said it will provide technical assistance to the investigation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed great concern over the accident and sent condolences to the Chinese victims and their families.

He instructed the Chinese embassy in the United States, the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, and the Chinese embassy in South Korea to work all out to accommodate the injured Chinese citizens and survivors and meanwhile keep in close contact with the U.S. and the South Korea side.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye offered her condolences to the families of passengers and said her government would make all necessary efforts to help handle the aftermath, according to her spokeswoman Kim Haing.

Asiana is South Korea's No. 2 airline, second in size to national carrier Korean Air. It has been trying to expand its business by attracting passengers with lower price tickets and shorter transits.

The Boeing 777-200 is a twin-engine aircraft often used for continental flights because it can travel 12 hours or more without refueling.

An earlier notable accident involving a Boeing 777-200 occurred on Jan. 17, 2008 at Heathrow Airport in London, causing 47 injuries but no fatalities.

Who coined 'United States of America'? Mystery might have intriguing answer.

Historians have long tried to pinpoint exactly when the name 'United States of America' was first used and by whom. A new find suggests the man might have been George Washington himself.

By Byron DeLear,?Contributor / July 4, 2013

The 1889 painting by Ramon de Elorriaga entitled 'The Inauguration of George Washington' is seen at New York's Federal Hall. Washington gave his name to the capital; perhaps he also gave the United States of America its name.

As if George Washington hasn?t been credited enough with laying the foundation stones of the American republic, a new discovery might put one more feather in his cap. Our leading Founding Father could have been author of the country's name.

The identity of who coined the name ?United States of America? has eluded historians for years. Online sources vary greatly, erroneously crediting Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and others.

But a letter written by Washington?s aide-de-camp on Jan. 2, 1776, discovered this past Memorial Day, suggests that Washington might have been one of the first people ? if not the first person ? to utter the words "United States of America."

Previously, William Safire and a bevy of Oxford and American researchers essentially concluded in 1998 that Thomas Jefferson was the originator. Jefferson wrote ?UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? in the header of his ?original Rough draught? of the Declaration of Independence sometime on or after June 11, 1776. Then last summer, the Monitor reported the discovery of an earlier citation in an anonymous essay appearing in the Virginia Gazette, dated April 6, 1776.

This latest find comes in a letter that Stephen Moylan, Esq., wrote to Col. Joseph Reed from the Continental Army Headquarters in Cambridge, Mass., during the Siege of Boston. The two men lived with Washington in Cambridge, with Reed serving as Washington?s favorite military secretary and Moylan fulfilling the role during Reed?s absence.

The letter touched on the colonies' desire to enlist Europe's help in their revolution?? most likely in procuring much-needed armaments and gunpowder. The shortage of powder was so desperate that, at one point, orders were issued to use wooden harpoons instead of guns. Moylan wrote that he wished to carry the ?full and ample powers from the United States of America? to Europe to support the revolutionary enterprise.

The letter was written at a time when the American colonies were increasingly taking on the trappings of a new, independent nation. As historian Kevin Philips summarizes, ?Despite lack of international legal recognition, the Continental Congress functioned as a de facto war government. By the end of 1775, the United Colonies had also created an army (June 15), a navy (October 13), and even a marine corps (November 10).?

When Congress appointed Washington commander-in-chief and dispatched him to Boston, Washington called his men ?the Troops of the United Provinces of North America.? Washington sought to turn these troops into a fighting force capable of engaging the most powerful military of the age, and at different times, Reed and Moylan worked side by side with him, issuing orders, writing letters, and sitting in council.
