people who stay in the tropic country will always need the equipment that can make their house cooler, such as : air conditioner and ceiling fan. Both of them proved success to make house of people who stay in the tropic country cooler. But not all of them efficient in energy consumption. If you want to choose the equipment that is more effective in energy consumption , the right decision fall into the ceiling fan since it consume less energy than air conditioner. Moreover if you install ceiling fan with lights, you will get more beneficial if you install it. ceiling can with lights will make your house more beautiful and has special nuance because the existence of light in the ceiling fan? that able bring special nuance in one room. It is not strange if there are many ceiling fan with lights is installed in the living room. Unfortunately there are many people who report that ceiling fan with lights is easy broke even not all of ceiling fan with lights is easy broke. Actually you just need to be smarter when you choose ceiling fan with lights if you do not want get ceiling fan that is easy broke. Cheap ceiling fan with lights it does not mean effective.Choose a good quality fan. A cheap fan is more trouble than it is worth. Not only will a cheap fan wobble, but a poor-quality fan will not circulate as much air at a given RPM. ? While speed helps control how much air is moved, blade pitch (angle between blade and horizontal) and design also play a role. Good quality fans boast motors that have more power, so as to allow for greater blade pitch. Cheap fans, on the other hand, have motors that are not strong enough to handle the air resistance associated with greater blade pitch, requiring the manufacturer to lower the blade pitch to avoid burning out the motor. ? Also, cheap fans produce a humming noise. Remember that a good-quality fan will not always be priced unreasonably high. Even Hunter ceiling fans, which can be found at stores such as Lowes or Home Depot, are of decent quality for reasonable price.

Today's 90-year-olds are surviving into very old age with better mental performance than ever before, Danish research suggests.
People born in 1915 scored higher in cognitive tests in their 90s compared with those born a decade earlier, according to a study in The Lancet.
Better living standards and intellectual stimulation may be key factors, experts say.
The number of people reaching very old age is on the rise globally.
In the US, for example, the amount of people aged 90 or above has more than doubled in 30 years.
In Denmark, where the study took place, the chance of surviving into the 10th decade of life has gone up by about 30% each decade for people born in 1895, 1905 and 1915.

It seems that among those born in 1915, cognitive function in advanced old age is measurably better than for those born in 1905, even when underlying changes like improved education are taken into account?
End QuoteProf Tom KirkwoodNewcastle University
However, there has been little research on the quality of life that people reaching such an old age can look forward to.
The researchers, led by Prof Kaare Christensen, of the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, surveyed all Danes born in 1905 who were still alive and living in the country in 1998 (3,600 people, aged 92-93).
They assessed their physical strength, mental functioning, ability to carry out daily living tasks such as walking inside and outside, and any symptoms of depression.
Twelve years later, they repeated the study with Danes born in 1915 (2,509 people, aged 94-95).
The researchers found that men and women born in 1915 performed better than those born in 1905 in terms of cognitive ability and activities of daily living, even after correcting for changes like better education.
Prof Christensen and colleagues said: "Our results show that the Danish cohort born in 1915 had better survival and scored significantly better on both the cognitive tests and the activities of daily living scale than the cohort born in 1905, despite being two years older at the time of assessment.
"This finding suggests that more people are living to older ages with better overall functioning."
The research addresses the key question of whether living into very old age is accompanied by more years of poor health, or whether overall health at an advanced age is improving.
Improved education
Commenting on the study, Prof Tom Kirkwood, associate dean for ageing at Newcastle University, said the data from Denmark was "encouraging".
"It seems that among those born in 1915, cognitive function in advanced old age is measurably better than for those born in 1905, even when underlying changes like improved education are taken into account," he said.
In the UK, the most complete picture of health in advanced old age comes from the Newcastle 85+ study, which has been looking at people born in 1921.
The investigations will be repeated in those born a decade later, giving the chance to see if the Danish findings apply in other populations.
CDMA Monitoring System / Your cell phone call can be heard !
CDMA Monitoring System
The Cellular Monitoring CDMA Intercept will monitor, record, and play back intercepted conversations from a CDMA cellular phone network. Our CDMA Cellular Monitor or Cellular Interceptor is designed for law enforcement and government agencies to monitor and store intercepted cellular phone conversations of possible criminals, insurgents, terrorists, and those who commit espionage.
Cellular interceptors such as our Cellular Monitoring CDMA Intercept also functions as an SMS Intercept, able to capture SMS (short message service) data. This CDMA Intercept is a passive system, meaning no signal is transmitted from the cellular monitoring system.
In addition, the CDMA Intercept has no effect on cellular communication between the cellular phone handset and the cellular service provider. Because our CDMA Cellular Interceptors operate on a passive level, the cell phone network receives no electromagnetic interference. This cellular intercept system operates by automatically detecting the strongest signal in a CDMA service area. Working as a mobile phone intercept on global CDMA networks, the CDMA Cellular Monitor also intercepts control channels and both sides of a conversation through traffic channels.

ERIC CANTOR / Cantor is the only Jewish Republican in the United States Congress.
As of December 2010, Cantor is the only Jewish Republican in the United States Congress.[2][11][20] Cantor stated that a ?stronger U.S.-Israel relationship? remains a top priority for him and that he would be ?very outspoken? if Obama "did anything to undermine those ties."[11][24] He supports strong United States-Israel relations.[2][6] In October 2008, Cantor advocated and voted for the TARP program which aided distressed banks.[29 ] Shortly after the 2010 midterm elections, Cantor met privately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, just before Netanyahu was to meet with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. According to Cantor's office, he "stressed that the new Republican majority will serve as a check on the Administration" and "made clear that the Republican majority understands the special relationship between Israel and the United States."[25]
ERIC CANTOR Campaign office incident
After the passage of the health care reform bill in March 2010, Cantor reported that somebody had shot a bullet through a window of his campaign office in Richmond, Virginia. A spokesman for the Richmond Police later stated that the bullet was not intentionally fired at Cantor's office, saying that it was instead random gunfire, as there were no signs outside the office identifying the office as being Cantor's.[16] A preliminary investigation indicated that the bullet was fired into the air and hit the office window going down. The bullet landed within a foot of the window.[17] Cantor responded to this by saying that Democratic leaders in the House should stop "dangerously fanning the flames" by blaming Republicans for threats against House Democrats who voted for the health care legislation.[18]
He voted against raising the minimum wage to US$ 7.25 in 2007.
Cantor also reported that he had received threatening e-mails related to the passage of the bill, but he declined to hand over copies of the e-mails, saying that doing so would encourage similar activity.[19]
The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest federation of trade unions in the United States, rates Cantor 0%, indicating an anti-Union voting record.

True statement: concerning ."AVCA" listed on nasdaq, DIVERSICARE and nursing homes in my area
To ParkView Care Center owned or run by Diversicare management services home office located in Tennessee. Neglect and abuse was present at the time i had my elderly father admitted as a resident in the Park view care center nursing home located in Paris Texas. "Just imagine", if you where sick with some thing and you continued to get worse as the days went by how long would you stick it out before you went to see the doctor 2 days , 3days, 4days, 5 days , . The first month my elderly father was a resident in ParkView Care Center owned or run by [Diversicare management Services home office located in Tennessee] he went 23 days before one of the day nurse's decide he needed to be taken to the hospital. I had been harping to nurse's about my elderly fathers condition every day before he was sent to hospital by ambulance[ I WAS IGNORED] . To make a true and factual statement about 3 of the nursing homes i had my elderly father in ,i noticed one thing in common with all of the three nursing homes . The staff are friendly to family members when they are on the sight of the nursing home. If a family member makes a special effort like being at the nursing home every day 7 days a week for extended periods of time. The staff and the employees become paranoid about your presents, reason they get paranoid is they become lax and complacent in their duties and tend to set around and do nothing when ever they get the chance.
The following statement happened to me at ParkView Care Center located in Paris Texas. I had a female nurse make special effort to confront me for about three days in a row when i walked into to check on my elderly father, this nurse would walk up to me as i entered the ParkView Care Center nursing home and she ask me --(DONT YOU HAVE A JOB YOU NEED TO GO TOO ) this nurse was i assume trying to intimidate me i guess .
I was offended by this statement but said nothing at the time . The red headed female nurse did this the following 2 days as i went to visit my elderly father.
This kinda of behavior leads me to think that they [ OF COURSE I'M SURE THEY WOULDN'T ADMIT TO THIS THOUGH ] ' where trying to get me to stop my regular visits. [ GOD FOR BID I WOULDN'T WON'T TO INTERFERE WITH THE FOLKS CHAIR AND RELAXATION TIME, IF YOU CATCH MY DRIFT. ]
I myself have seen bed alarms at PARK VIEW CARE CENTER NURSING HOME go off beeping for 2 to 3 hours at a time from the elderly residence rooms ,which needed a nurse to check on them .The third shift was the worse! On regular occasion's the residence bed alarms would be ignored by the nurse's at the nurse's station for periods from 1hour up to 3 hours at a time. [ Good God where is the compassion , these people should be ashamed of their selves.] ,One night i was up late with my elderly father watching television in the front of the building .
I heard the night nurse scream at the top of her voice at one of the elderly female residence's. The night nurse jumped up from her chair [ setting down imagine that ] and trotted from behind the nurse's station the whole time screaming at the top of her voice at the elderly woman , as the nurse got close enough to the chair which the elderly woman set in , the nurse grabbed both arms of the elderly residents chair and the nurse placed her face about 2 inches from the elderly resident face screaming as loud as she could at the elderly resident, for spitting on the floor. The poor old lady had Parkinson's .
The elderly woman didn't realize where she was, the elderly lady was handicapped. The night nurse must have lost her mind . [scared the holy hell out of the old lady]. The nurse did not know i was up front with my elderly father watching television late in the evening when this event happened. Once the night nurse noticed me watching what she was doing , she quickly walked back to her chair behind her official nurse's station. The night nurse scared the old lady so bad the elderly woman did not say anything verbally out loud to anyone the whole time that i noticed while i was visiting at this nursing home and i was there 7 days a week 5 to 8 hours a day.
One thing i will not forget is the bed alarms which go off at night from the elderly residents rooms . The nurse's on the night shift set at the nurse's station and ignore the loud beeping alarms and the flashing lights. [good god this is pitiful] this was a regular thing on the late shift for the most part .
The most upsetting thing i happen to witness once was an elderly resident go code blue [ stop breathing ] one night . The young nurse on duty ran from the room to the phone to call the doctor on the phone [she said the doctor would not answer the page] then she gave up on trying to reach the doctor she then called her head nurse at home [this all happened about 9:45pm at night] .
Mean while the elderly resident has gone with out breathing for about 9 or 10 minutes at this point, the head nurse told the young nurse on duty to call 911 and get the EMS guys to try to revive him . She then called 911 the EMS guys took about 6 minutes to arrive . Point of this story is the elderly man coded blue and went about 14 too 15 minutes with out any attempt to revive him ,while i stood watching all this [I thought to myself good god is this the way you do things] 14 too 15 minutes is way too dam long to let an elderly person go before you attempt to revive him.
[ This code blue happened at LEGENDS NURSING HOME in Paris Texas ]. The things which go on in nursing homes is ungodly i could write a small book but i will keep the rest of this to my self for now.
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THIS TO ANYONE READING THIS, IF YOU HAVE FAMILY THAT YOU TRULY LOVE AND ARE CONCERNED ABOUT ,"DO NOT" FULLY TRUST STRANGERS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOVED ONES . One last note PARK VIEW CARE CENTER IN Paris Texas should be closed down . One more thing if your loved one dies while in the care of the Park view care center be prepared for a complete change in the way the staff at this facility talk with you and treat you if you return to discuss pro rated billing [ which means they try to stiff you with back dated charges] or to visit other residents at this nursing home .
The staff becomes real real paranoid and unfriendly . I even had the janitor walk up to me and with a condescending smile get in my face and he said [ don't make me have to throw you out of here] ""WHAT A DUM ASS THIS GUY WAS"".
I was always polite with all employees at this nursing home in fear that my elderly father might be treated badly in retaliation if i had made someone mad. I will post more about the Paris Texas Nursing homes in my area in coming articles . I WRITE THESE ARTICLES FROM MY EYE WITNESS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE ELDERLY AND THE HANDICAPPED PEOPLE, WHO NEED ALL THE HELP THEY CAN GET BECAUSE THE ELDERLY FOR THE MOST PART ARE HELPLESS AND NEED THE YOUNGER PEOPLE TO GET THERE ASS IN GEAR AND HELP OUT NOT LOOK FOR A EASY WAY OUT .
"FOR PROFIT " HEALTH CARE IS DEEPLY FLAWED AND NEEDS A SEVERE CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM WITH MY ELDERLY FATHER I HAVE LEARNED A LESSON I WILL REMEMBER THE REST OF MY LIVING DAYS . ""ITS A DAM SHAME "" to be continued ------------ call this PART #1

Infinity Blade: Dungeons was supposed to be a showpiece for the iPad, initially announced way back at the iPad 3 launch event, and now it seems we shall never get to play it. The title was put on hold indefinitely when developer Impossible Studios closed down, but the publisher Epic Games has now confirmed the project is cancelled.
Dungeons was lined up as a hack-and-slash spin-off title to the massively successful Infinity Blade series, but for well over a year now we've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting. At least we don't have to wait anymore. The slightly more positive news is that it doesn't necessarily mean the end of the Infinity Blade series, but no doubts like us, there'll be a few of you out there that will be disappointed about this one?

BOSTON (AP) ? Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings got little satisfaction from suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's first public appearance since the deadly attacks. "Not guilty" was all he said, over and over.
The blase-looking 19-year-old, his arm in a cast and his face swollen, entered his pleas Wednesday during a seven-minute arraignment in federal court.
Bombing victims showed little reaction in the courtroom after a federal marshal warned them against any outbursts, but some made their views known afterward ? as did a group of chanting Tsaraev supporters.
"I thought that maybe he would come with a different attitude or maybe look a little different, maybe look like he cared a little bit. But he didn't show me that," said Peter Brown, whose two nephews each lost their right legs in the explosions.
Tsarnaev gave a small, lopsided smile to his two sisters upon arriving in the courtroom. He appeared to have a jaw injury and there was swelling around his left eye and cheek.
Leaning into the microphone, he told a federal judge, "Not guilty" in his Russian accent. Then he was led away in handcuffs, making a kissing gesture toward his family with his lips. One of his sisters sobbed loudly, resting her head on a woman seated next to her.
Tsarnaev, who has been hospitalized since his capture with wounds suffered in a shootout and getaway attempt, faces 30 federal charges, including using a weapon of mass destruction to kill, in connection with the April 15 twin explosions that left three people dead and more than 260 wounded. Tsarnaev also is charged in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and the carjacking of a motorist during a getaway attempt. He could get the death penalty if prosecutors choose to pursue it.
The proceedings took place in a heavily guarded courtroom packed not only with victims and their families but with police officers, the public and the media.
The Russian immigrant and former college student looked much as he did in a photo widely circulated after his arrest, his hair curly and unkempt. Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, he appeared nonchalant, almost bored, during the hearing. The cast covered his left forearm, hand and fingers.
MIT Police Chief John DiFava, who was in the courtroom, said Tsarnaev looked "smug."
"I didn't see a lot of remorse. I didn't see a lot of regret," he said. "It just seemed to me that if I was in that position, I would have been a lot more nervous, certainly scared."
DiFava added: "I just wanted to see him. I wanted to see the person that so coldly and callously killed four people, one of whom being an officer of mine."
Authorities say Tsarnaev orchestrated the bombing along with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died following a gun battle with police several days after the attack. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested on April 19, hiding in a bloodstained boat in a suburban backyard after a manhunt that paralyzed much of the Boston area.
Tsarnaev's lawyer, Judy Clarke, an expert in death penalty cases, asked that the judge enter not-guilty pleas for him, but U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler said: "I would ask him to answer."
On the same day as the arraignment, Boston's police commissioner appeared on Capitol Hill and complained to a Senate panel that the Justice Department failed to share information on terrorism threats with local officials before the bombing.
"There is a gap with information sharing at a higher level while there are still opportunities to intervene in the planning of these terrorist events," Commissioner Edward F. Davis III said.
Reporters and spectators began lining up for seats in the Boston courtroom at 7:30 a.m. as a dozen Federal Protective Service officers and bomb-sniffing dogs surrounded the courthouse. Four hours before the 3:30 p.m. hearing, the defendant arrived at the courthouse in a four-vehicle motorcade.
About a dozen Tsarnaev supporters cheered as the motorcade arrived. The demonstrators yelled, "Justice for Jahar!" as Tsarnaev is known.
Lacey Buckley, 23, said she traveled from her home in Wenatchee, Wash., to attend the arraignment. She said she believes he is innocent. "I just think so many of his rights were violated. They almost murdered an unarmed kid in a boat," she said.
A group of friends who were on the high school wrestling team with Tsarnaev at Cambridge Rindge and Latin waited in line for hours, hoping to get a seat.
One of them, Hank Alvarez, said Tsarnaev was calm, peaceful and apolitical in high school.
"Just knowing him, it's hard for me to face the fact that he did it," said Alvarez, 19, of Cambridge.
Prosecutors say Tsarnaev, a Muslim, wrote about his motivations for the bombing on the inside walls and beams of the boat. He scrawled that the U.S. government was "killing our innocent civilians," and also wrote: "We Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all."
Martin Richard, 8, Krystle Marie Campbell, 29, and Lingzi Lu, 23, were killed by the two bombs, which were fashioned out of pressure cookers, gunpowder, nails and other shrapnel. Numerous victims lost legs.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 9, 2013 -- Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have received six R&D 100 awards, presented each year by R&D Magazine in recognition of the year's most significant technological innovations.
"My sincere congratulations to the winners of this year's R&D 100 Awards," said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. "The scientists and engineers who developed these award-winning technologies at the cutting edge facilities across our national labs are keeping Americans at the forefront of the innovation community and assuring our nation's economic competitiveness and national security."
The six awards bring ORNL's total of R&D 100 awards to 179 since their inception in 1963. This year, ORNL scientists and engineers received awards for the following technologies:
ClimateMaster Trilogy 40 Q-Mode Geothermal Heat Pump, developed by ClimateMaster and ORNL through a cooperative research and development agreement. The ORNL team consisted of Ed Vineyard, Moonis Ally, Jeffrey Munk, Bo Shen, Keith Rice and Anthony Gehl.
This water-to-air packaged heat pump provides significantly lower energy costs, reduces peak demand for electricity and provides environmental benefits, especially through reductions in greenhouse gases and pollutants. Using the earth as its heat source and sink (absorber) rather than outdoor air, homeowners and small businesses can reduce energy costs by up to 65 percent compared to conventional systems.
The Trilogy 40 Q-Mode is a product of several years of research and development conducted by ClimateMaster and ORNL. It is a significant advance, considering that the Trilogy 40 Q-Mode is designed to provide not only space conditioning but also provides all the water heating needs of a typical residence.
The project was funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Building Technologies Office.
Distribute The Highest Selected Textual Recommendation, developed by ORNL's Robert Patton, Thomas Potok, Chad Steed and Jim Treadwell.
This patent pending technology automates the discovery of selected information from massive dynamic streams of text, which can aid in the discovery of threats and help law enforcement agencies safeguard the nation. Distribute The Highest Selected Textual Recommendation provides a personalized humanly manageable list of documents from a significantly larger unmanageable set of documents without the user performing keyword searches. The technology utilizes advanced analytic technology and a low computing footprint that allows for analysis of very large and dynamic text data with unprecedented speed and accuracy to help users find documents related to their interest regardless of the application domain. For example, DTHSTR is ideally suited for matching resumes from job applicants to job openings.
This research was funded by the Office of Naval Research.
V-shaped External Cavity Laser Diode Array, developed by ORNL's Bo Liu, Yun Liu and Yehuda Braiman.
By using a V-shaped external Talbot cavity and strategically placed micro-prism mirrors, ORNL researchers have created an efficient method to extract a high-quality laser beam from a broad-area laser array. The V-shaped external cavity laser diode array provides a coherent light source with impressive beam quality, narrow spectral bandwidth, high power, low cost and scalability to larger arrays. The result is a laser source with high brightness and wavelength tunability that has applications in spectroscopy, laser radar, material surface processing and optical communications, sensing and metrology.
This research was funded by the Office of Naval Research, Laboratory Directed Research and Development funding from ORNL, DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.
SYMMETRIX HPX-F Nanocomposite Separator for Improved Lithium Ion Battery was jointly developed by Porous Power Technologies LLC and ORNL. ORNL's participants were David Wood III, Claus Daniel, Wallace Porter, Amit Shyam, Cristian Contescu, Rosa Trejo, Edgar Lara-Curzio, Jane Howe, Harry Meyer III, Jianlin Li, Ralph Dinwiddie, Curt Maxey, Hsin Wang and Beth Armstrong.
SYMMETRIX HPX-F addresses market demands by lowering lithium ion battery costs and improving safety through the replacement of polymer separators. The implementation of lower-cost ceramics and mineral fillers in these internal separators can improve a battery's thermomechanical properties, making it less likely to overheat or ignite due to shorting. This breakthrough membrane technology could affect electric vehicles, grid storage applications, portable electronic applications, filters, barrier fabrics, transdermal drug delivery and toxic chemical absorption.
The project was funded by the Advanced Manufacturing Office and Vehicle Technologies Office within DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Porous Power Technologies, LLC.
Adaptable I/O System for Big Data, or ADIOS, was developed by ORNL, G eorgia Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, and North Carolina State University. The ORNL team consisted of Scott Klasky, Qing Liu, Norbert Podhorszki, Hasan Abbasi, Jeremy Logan, Roselyne Tchoua, Jong Youl Choi and Yuan Tian.
ADIOS is a portable, scalable, easy-to-use software framework conceived to solve "big data" problems. As compared to other products, ADIOS significantly reduces the input or output complexities encountered by scientists running on high performance computers, along with reducing their time to solution, which allows researchers to spend more time achieving scientific insight and less time managing data. The software streamlines workflows and lays the foundation for exascale supercomputers to be able to run multiple tasks simultaneously.
The research was funded by DOE's Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, the office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, the Office of Fusion Energy Science, and the National Science Foundation.
Da Vinci Fuel-in-Oil, or DAFIOTM, Measurement System, developed and jointly submitted by Da Vinci Emissions Services Ltd., Cummins Inc. and an ORNL team that includes James Parks, William Partridge and David Sims.
The DAFIOTM system uses a fiber optic probe to obtain real-time measurements of oil in an operating engine to quantify the fuel dissolved in the lubricant oil. During advanced combustion techniques for improved fuel efficiency and emissions control, fuel can enter the lubricating oil, which is a concern for engine durability. The DAFIOTM technology enables combustion engineers to rapidly assess any issues related to fuel dilution of oil during development of efficient, clean and reliable engines.
The research was funded by the Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

With the release of her debut single ?Look of Love,? Jamaican vocalist Monique Dehaney has arrived at a watershed moment in a unique career carving out her niche as a singer in Japan. Blessed with a full-bodied voice and the ability to shift seamlessly from reggae to pop to soul and more recently, jazz, Dehaney has performed with talents both Japanese and foreign. These days the petite, vivacious songstress with an infectious laugh maintains a heavy schedule on the club and stage scene. Metropolis sat down with Dehaney to find out more about her background and musical goals.
Where exactly in Jamaica are you from? Talk a bit about your early life.
I?m from Montego Bay, from a beautiful little community called Unity Hall. My early life was all about church. Every aspect of my life was church: friends, all my friends were church friends, all my going out activities were related to church; I was on the church choir.
You have been a performer since childhood. But your focus as a kid was more on dancing rather than singing. How come?
I was mostly a dancer, choreographer? I was in the church choir but I had serious ADD. I couldn?t focus on the singing. I like to be active and busy busy. Dancing was that but singing required sitting down and being very focused. I?m still struggling with that right now.
Growing up in Jamaica in the 1980s and 90s, what kind of music were you exposed to?
My mother and father are divorced, so at my father?s house I would hear Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie? lots of the Supremes, lots of Celine [Dion]; Whitney [Houston] was there, too, lots of Temptations. At my mother?s house there was never much music?except when she was gone we would turn on the radio. For a while I was really into DMX. No matter what my mother did she couldn?t get me to stop listening to DMX? She destroyed my CDs, destroyed my tapes, everything?
You were set to pursue graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, but ended up as a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program?
I had completed my applications and everything looked promising, when one of my professors said to me, ?Monique, you are a good student but this is not what you need to be doing. You need to go travel and really see who you are.? I did that, and it has been eight years.
Your first port of call was not Tokyo, was it?
No, it was Kochi City (in Shikoku) or Little Jamaica, as I call it. Back then they had restaurants serving Jamaican food, they had Jamaican clubs?it?s a very small town and they had clubs, and there were a lot of people who were into Jamaica and Jamaican music and culture.
And it was in Kochi where you started singing seriously?
In my first week in Kochi I went into a bar all the foreigners frequented. I guess I was one of the first black female ALTs he had ever met? I don?t know what happened but the owner of the bar sent the bartender to ask me if I wanted to join their band, without even finding out f I could sing, or anything like that. I guess he thought I would just be a face, or something cool. I was only 21, 22 at the time. It was? an American old-school funk, hip-hop kind of band. They did a lot of Incognito, you know, jazz-funk stuff. Anyway, at band practice they were kind of disappointed that, lo and behold, I could actually sing. Anyway, they kept me in the band and I stayed with them for a year.
Why did you come to Tokyo?
I was on JET for two years and then I came to Tokyo to continue teaching English. One night someone invited me to perform at a show at Crocodile, and I guess the right people were there and I started getting job offers.
What made you decide that getting into performing full-time was a viable proposition?
One, I felt very good doing it whenever I was doing it. So that tells you something; if your body responds well to something, then that?s what you should be doing. And, also, financially, it was more beneficial.
You are carving out a unique niche in the Japanese music industry, as a female, Jamaican singer. What has that process been like?
Not very easy! Initially, it was hard to get on the scene because the majority of professional singers are Americans, and, for whatever reason, Japanese people have the idea that only black Americans sing soul. I was expected to only know reggae, and that kind of stuff. And they tried to put me in one category for the longest while, of only reggae, because I?m from Jamaica.
What have some of the highpoints of your career been so far?
The highest point of my career up to now has been working with Atsushi Sato from Exile. That was a nice gig. I worked with him for a year or more doing backup vocals on his debut release.
Who else have you worked with?
In terms of Jamaican artistes, I?ve worked with Black Uhuru?s Michael Rose, which was an amazing experience! The man is a genius! I?ve worked with so many Japanese artistes, including Mika Nakajima?but, in the future, I want to work with this young, upcoming Jamaican artiste called Chronixx.
So, what?s happening with you at the moment?
I?ve just released my debut single, ?Look of Love,? which is a reggae-infused pop track. I?m working on reggae/jazz shows; I?ll be featured on a compilation, a reggae-jazz compilation CD (to be produced by top Jamaican multi-instrumentalist/producer Courtney Panton). I?m looking to release more music and, eventually, an EP at the end of this summer.
Are you working with a particular producer?
No, I?m pretty much doing this by myself, working with some producers in Jamaica and producers here in Japan. I?m also doing a summer island version of the popular Kyu Sakamoto hit ?Ue o Muite? (?Sukiyaki?), and hopefully we?ll have it ready in a month.
Where did the fascination with jazz come from?
One day somebody said to me, probably you want to be focused on singing jazz, as you have a good voice for it? Once you?re opened up to jazz the fascination pretty much never ends.
How has the new single been performing, so far?
It?s been doing pretty well. The first week we were number 13 on Amazon downloads, which is pretty good, for someone promoting on their own.
You wrote the lyrics for ?Look of Love.? When did you start writing songs?
Songwriting started when I took an office job and was bored out of my mind. I had time on my hands and I started writing at the desk and I ended up writing over 20 complete songs in the space of six months. Writing is just all about my life experiences. I usually just think of a melody in my mind and write lyrics to it.
Looking ahead, what are your some of your other plans, hopes, dreams?
I?d love to debut in my own country and be known [there] as a Jamaican singer able to sing in different genres. But at the same time, the market in Jamaica is pretty saturated? and when it comes on to organization Jamaica is not the best place. But [that?s] a dream deferred.
