New malaria method could boost drug production (AP)

BERLIN ? German scientists have developed a new way to make a key malaria drug that they say could easily quadruple production and drop the price significantly, increasing the availability of treatment for a disease that kills hundreds of thousands every year.

Chemists at the Max Planck Institute take the waste product from the creation of the drug artemisinin ? artemisinic acid ? and convert it into the drug itself.

The entire apparatus is compact, about the size of a carry-on suitcase, and inexpensive. That means it can be easily added to production sites anywhere around the world.

"Four hundred of these would be enough to make a world supply of artemisinin," said unit director Peter Seeberger, pointing to the machine on a table in his lab in Berlin's Dahlem neighborhood. "The beauty of these things is they're very small and very mobile."

A paper on the new technique was published this month in chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie.

Artemisinin is extracted from sweet wormwood, a plant that primarily grows in China and Vietnam and varies in its availability according to the season. In the extraction process, for every part artemisinin produced, there is 10 times the amount of artemisinic acid discarded as waste.

Past attempts to convert the acid using ultraviolet light to trigger the conversion have been unsuccessful because the process took several steps in a large tank of acid, making production inefficient and far too expensive.

So the Max Planck chemists thought small ? creating a machine that pumps all of the required ingredients through a thin tube wrapped around a UV lamp in a continuous process that takes 4 1/2 minutes from start-to-finish to produce the artemisinin.

The technique can convert about 40 percent of the waste acid into artemisinin ? producing four times more of the drug from what had in the past been discarded, Seeberger said.

Colin Sutherland, a malaria expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who was not involved in the Max Planck research, said the development could be significant in boosting production of the key malaria drug. He noted that currently very little artemisinin can be made from a large amount of the sweet wormwood, which is also difficult to grow.

"If it's a simple process, given a certain amount of plant material, you can generate more drugs, that will make things cheaper and faster," he said.

Since the end product is the same molecule, there should be no decrease in effectiveness of the synthetic product, Sutherland said.

Seeberger said a commercial prototype of the Max Planck machine could be ready in about six months and that it could go into production in about a year. He said current price estimates are around euro100,000 (US$132,000).

When it's in production, the idea is to make it available for a minimal fee to cover costs, he said.

"The goal is to make sure that the drug is produced and made available to as many people as possible," said Seeberger, a former Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor who now teaches at Berlin's Free University.

Sabine Haubenreisser, a spokeswoman at the European Medicines Agency, said that if the new drug is close enough to the original, its producers could apply for it to be considered as a generic product or use older data proving artemesinin's effectiveness ? which could speed the approval process.

Malaria cases and deaths have been dropping since 2004, due largely to campaigns to distribute bednets, spray homes with insecticide and make better drugs available. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 655,000 people die of malaria every year, mostly children under 5 in Africa.

At the moment, artemisinin-based therapies are considered the best treatment, but cost about $10 per dose ? far too much for impoverished communities.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton's Clinton Foundation currently has a program to purchase the treatments, then sell them at a deeply discounted 50 cents to communities where they're most needed.

Cutting the price further while increasing production could "make a big difference," said Sutherland.

"Many times more children will have access to the right drug early in their disease and that's likely to have an impact on mortality."

Family Tree | Achieving Clarity

When I wrote my list of goals for my home in 2012 I included my goal of organizing some of the thousands (without exaggeration) of photos we inherited from my husband?s parents.

There were sepia rectangular photos and sepia squares. Those gave way to black and whites with deckled edges and then black and white with straight edges. ?The black and white blossomed to muted color squares. ?These were replaced with 1960s versions with rounded corners and an overall rusty brown hue and progressed to longer more rectangular versions in the same tones. ?On and on the evolution continued until finally there is a boatload of 4 x 6 matte finish snapshots that capture the lifetimes of my own children.

I was delighted to have the photos. The boxes include some real treasures. ?Both family history and American history is documented. ?Great grandparents, a surprising number of nuns and priests, WWII soldiers in Japan. ?It is an amazing array to be sure. ?I did not want to simply stick the photos away so I have been searching for some unique ways to put them on display in my home.

The old ladder I hung in the mudroom now holds a three tiered copper basket that is filled with shots, each tier holding a different era.

?

A copper pot sits on an old school desk in the sunroom holding many of the WWII shots.

The black and white straight edged photos are some of my very favorite. ?These show my husband and his twin brother as little boys in the first half of the 1960s. ?They are adorable. ?I feel happy just looking at them so I wanted them very visible. ?I decided to create a ?family tree? using these photographs.

I clipped branches from the yard and stuck them in a vase. ?I used landscaping rocks to anchor the branches and to give the vase weight so the entire display would not be top heavy.

Using glue dots I stuck two photos back to back. ?I folded a short bit of grosgrain ribbon (approx. 1.5 inches) in half to form a loop around the branch and secured it between the photos with the glue dots. ?I scattered photos around the branches until I had a look I liked.

Then I put the arrangement near the couch where I can sit and enjoy the pictures as I relax.

I am a married mother of three fabulous people from teenaged to young adult. I have been married to one great guy for over a quarter of a century and hope we haven't reached the halfway point of our marriage yet. Writing helps me sort things out and avoid unsavory tasks that I probably should be doing. I've reached middle age in middle America and am anxious to see what comes next. India news: Yuvraj Singh has been diagnosed with cancer and is ...

Yuvraj Singh has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy in the United States. A tumour on his lung was diagnosed as non-malignant late last year, but his physiotherapist has now confirmed that it is cancerous. Dr Jatin Chaudhary said it was "100% curable" and that Yuvraj would be "fit to be back on the field" in May.

"It is a rare tumour and is cancerous but it has been detected in stage one itself (Stage 0 refers to cancer that is just beginning, while stages 1 to 4 are progressively more advanced cancers)," Chaudhary told PTI.

"Doctors had to decide whether to continue medication or go for chemotherapy but since parts of the tumour are just above the artery of his heart, there was a danger that while running it could burst. But it is 100% curable.

"The doctors decided that he would have to undergo chemotherapy and he travelled to the US on January 26. End of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then.

Yuvraj hasn't played competitive cricket since the Tests against West Indies last November, when news of his tumour became public. He had originally hoped to make a comeback in the tri-series in Australia, but last month it was announced that he would not be fit in time for the IPL, which begins in April. "Thankfully no surgery is required, he is already a lot better than what he was and can't wait to be back on the cricket field.

"Once he is done with chemo in March, his rehabilitation would be complete by April end and he would be perfectly fit to play in May."

A Man-of-the-Series performance in India's World Cup win in 2011 has been sandwiched by two forgettable years for Yuvraj. He battled with form and fitness in 2010, losing his place in the side. After the World Cup, several injuries curtailed his appearances for India, before the detection of the tumour forced his current absence from cricket.

Environmental and Urban Economics: Pension Investing and ...

In the developed West, individuals seek to have a comfortable retirement and have saved trillions of dollars in private savings and mutual fund holdings and retirement plans. ? The institutional investors are aware that U.S Treasuries pay 0% right now. ?Will the U.S Stock Market yield a 7% annual return over the next decade? ?It is possible but this would mean that the Dow Jones will be rise to 25,000 in the year 2022. ?If the Dow Jones experiences such a rise, then?Glassman and Hassett will be selling more copies of their 2nd edition of Dow 36,000.

So, I predict that institutional investors will turn to the developing world seeking higher returns but what are the risks of seeking those returns? ?Will Moodys and S&P invest in highly trained institutional analysts so that Western investors actually know the true risks that they face in investing in the developing world?

I predict that the asymmetric information issues that we faced with the mortgage backed securities in the U.S will be even more severe here.

There is also the issue of political risk. ?How will the ratings agencies use econometric models to predict whether there will be a coup in Egypt and whether the new government will renege on foreign debt? ?I recognize that if investors know that they don't know these risks that they will demand ?a larger risk premium in terms of higher interest rates.

As the U.S has trillions invested in certain LDC nations, will we ask our military to get involved to protect our interests in these nations? ?In the past, there were multinational companies such as Exxon who had invested in irreversible capital in such nations but I'm anticipating that moving forward that hundreds of millions of Americans will have a financial stake in the health of these LDCs because the productive growth is taking place there and our capital has been invested there. ?Will this "skin in the game" make our people more interested in foreign affairs? ?Will more Congressmen get a passport?

Sprint investors in purgatory until 2013 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Sprint Nextel (S.N), like its bigger rivals, is expected to report a steep decline in fourth-quarter profit margins due to its launch of the costly Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPhone.

But the comparison ends there, according to analysts, who say that an investment in the No. 3 U.S. mobile provider is a much riskier bet than one in Verizon Communications (VZ.N) or AT&T Inc (T.N) since it may be years before investors see a return.

"If you're buying (Sprint), you're buying it as a long-term investor, not because you're expecting the results to show dramatic improvements in the next couple of quarters," said Barclays analyst James Ratcliffe.

Along with ballooning costs from the iPhone, Sprint is also being weighed down by a $7 billion network upgrade and the cost of running two different networks, one of which it plans to shut down in 2013.

On top of this, Sprint has had a spate of involuntary customer cancellations at retail partners, which typically happens if a customer is behind in bill payments.

Earlier this week Radioshack (RSH.N), a Sprint retail partner, blamed weak Sprint subscriber numbers for its own disappointing forecast.

Taken together, Nomura analyst Michael McCormack said these issues leave Sprint "ill-prepared to deal with the effect of the iPhone." That's bad news given that Sprint already committed to paying Apple a minimum of $15.5 billion over four years.

"In 2012, and to a large extent 2013, you're basically in purgatory," said McCormack, who does not expect clarity on Sprint's investment prospects until the company has completed its high-speed wireless upgrade, scheduled for the end of 2013.

Because the iPhone is so popular, service providers see it as a must-have phone if they want to keep their customers from straying to rival services. Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse said the iPhone has been the single biggest cause of customer defections from his company's service.

Operators pay Apple a hefty subsidy that analysts say is about $400 per phone, or roughly double the fee they pay other phone makers. The subsidy allows operators to offer a discount to consumers who sign two-year contracts.

The subsidy will hit Sprint in the fourth quarter -- its first quarter selling the device -- in the form of a wireless service margin decline to 8.6 percent from 17.6 percent in the third quarter, according to the average from eight analyst estimates compiled by Reuters.

In comparison, its bigger rivals have much healthier margins even after steep iPhone related declines. Verizon Wireless' fourth-quarter margin fell to 42.2 percent from 47.8 percent in the third quarter, for instance, while AT&T's margin fell to 28.7 percent from 43.7 percent.

Despite the margin compression, the iPhone is seen as helping subscriber growth at Sprint, which reports quarterly results on February 8. Sprint is expected to report about 272,000 net additions for the quarter, according to eight analyst estimates compiled by Reuters. That compares to a loss of 44,000 subscribers in the third quarter.

But many are questioning whether the subscriber growth rate is sustainable. Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin sees Sprint reverting to subscriber losses in the first and second quarters as the iPhone sales surge dies down after the launch.

One hope is that the device will boost Sprint's revenue as smartphone users tend to spend more on data services than subscribers with less advanced phones. However, the benefit is minimized if many of the operators' iPhone customers are upgrading to it from another smartphone as their monthly fees would remain the same.

Evercore analyst Jonathan Schildkraut estimated that 25 percent of Sprint's fourth-quarter iPhone customers moved from another operator while 45 percent upgraded from a smartphone and only 30 percent upgraded from less advanced phones.

Since investors have such bleak expectations going into the quarter, Schildkraut hopes that any positive comments from the company on its outlook for the year will help Sprint's share price, which has languished below $3 since October.

By comparison, Verizon's shares closed at $37.56 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange where AT&T ended the day at $29.79. Sprint shares closed at $2.21 also on NYSE.

"It's a challenging quarter and the outlook is going to be challenging," said BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk.

Dear 'Idol' judges: It's time to get mean!

Hey, Steven, J.Lo and Randy: It's OK to be brutally honest with the contestants, OK?!

By Craig Berman

OPINION

When ?American Idol? was young and feisty, it made its reputation by taking the dreams of unworthy hopefuls and ripping them to shreds. With Simon Cowell as the judges' ringleader, delusional applicants would have their voices trashed, their faces likened to those of wild animals, and sometimes even brought back for the finale for another round of mocking.

It was controversial and cruel?... and also must-see TV.

But if auditioning in?those days brought the terror of having to wow the Mean Crowd in high school, now it?s like performing before friends and family. You might get some strange facial expressions and people might talk about you behind your back, but nobody is actually going to be mean to your face. If this is like last season, record exec Jimmy Iovine and his crew are going to be a lot harsher to the singers good enough to make it to Hollywood than the judges have been to those who are wasting everybody?s time when they try out.

The old style with Simon may have been unduly harsh, but it definitely broke up the tedium. The auditions are otherwise just hours upon hours of performers who blend together, with many getting airtime now only to later exit the show anonymously in Hollywood. There?s no incentive to fall in love with anyone this early, and there?s no need to write down what nastiness the judges said to discuss at work the next day since those comments are a thing of the past, so there?s no real reason to watch.

Take Phong Vu's performance on last?Thursday?s Texas auditions, for example. He had no chance of advancing to the next round. The only reason he was put forward was for comic relief. But rather than the brutal truth, the judges responded with kindness.

?You know, you?ve got the passion?... but your voice is not interpreting what she sang. There wasn?t enough you in it,? Steven Tyler said. I?m no Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, but even I understood that the problem was there was too much Phong Vu in those vocals, not too little.

?Thank you, Phong Vu. It?s not going to work this time,? Jennifer Lopez added. "This time"? When?s it going to work, 2095?

Tealana Hedgespeth got her turn the previous episode in Aspen, Colo. She was bad enough that J.Lo turned to Tyler and whispered, ?If you ask her for another song, I?m gonna kill you.? And to the judges'?credit, if you?re looking for whispered criticisms or funny faces, these three are perfect.

But when the music stopped ...

?Have you ever recorded your voice and listened back? You gotta do that ?cause then you?ll hear what we?re hearing,? Tyler said. Left unsaid was ?... because what we?re hearing is making our eardrums bleed.?

?I think you?re adorable, but it?s a no,? J.Lo said.

?Love you, you?re so cute, but the singing?s not there yet,? Randy Jackson said. And by ?not there yet,? he meant ?hasn?t even left the driveway.?

So we got an 0-3 vote that was clearly warranted?... but with nothing but kindness. Here?s your blue ribbon for participation. Come back and see us again next year!

Those who complained about the nastiness of the old regime have gotten their wish?-- these judges are unwilling to be dream-crushers. And while Rosie O?Donnell may be pleased with the results, it makes the auditions rather dull for the rest of us.

?Idol? can?t just show the good singers, or it?ll seem like everyone who walks in off the street is awesome. But without the negative commentary, bad singers are just that?... bad singers. When you hear one on the radio, you change the station. ?Idol? had best hope that TV viewers don?t do the same.

How would you like to see the judges improve this season? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Do the judges need to get mean?

Children's Health Insurance Options by State for 2012 ? Get Smart ...

Health Insurance Plans For Children?Child-only? health insurance plans are individual health insurance policies made available to children age 18 and under with no parent or guardian listed on the same policy. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act prevents insurers from declining health insurance applications for children due to pre-existing medical conditions. As an unintended consequence of the law, however, some health insurance companies stopped offering child-only insurance plans altogether.

In response, certain states and insurance companies have designated ?open enrollment? periods for child-only plans ? specific annual or biannual enrollment windows when parents or guardians can enroll children in their own individual health insurance plans without danger of being declined due to their medical history.

So, what?s the story on child-only plans for 2012?

Well, compared to last year?s Child-only Health Insurance Plans for 2011, the picture has improved a bit for people who want to enroll their kids in coverage. Overall, there are most states with child-only health insurance options in 2012, though some states have reduced the frequency of open enrollment periods. Some states are also allowing health insurance companies more freedom in deciding when or if to hold open enrollment for children?s plans.

Below is a breakdown of states where child-only plans are available at least part of the year, and when open enrollment periods may apply. You can also download a PDF version of this information by clicking here: Child-only Health Insurance Plans for 2012. This is not necessarily a complete list and the details here are subject to change, but we offer it as a hopefully-helpful guide parents and guardians in 2012:

Arkansas ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

California ? Open enrollment occurs during child?s birth month ? Applications submitted at other times may be approved with a higher premium due to pre-existing conditions.

Colorado ? Open enrollment occurs in January and July 2012.

Connecticut ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

Delaware ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

District of Columbia ? Insurers offering child-only plans may hold January or July open enrollment.

Hawaii ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

Idaho ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

Iowa ? Open enrollment occurs July 1 through August 14, 2012.

Illinois ? Open enrollment occurs in January and July 2012.

Kansas ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company and by locale.

Kentucky ? Open enrollment occurs in January 2012.

Maine ? Child-only policies available all year long.

Maryland ? Open enrollment in January and July 2012.

Massachusetts ? Open enrollment occurs from July 1 through August 15, 2012.

Missouri ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company and by locale.

Montana ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

New Hampshire ? Availability of child-only plans may vary by insurance company.

New Jersey ? Child-only policies available all year long.

New Mexico ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company.

New York ? Child-only policies available all year long.

Ohio ? Open enrollment occurs in March 2012.

Oklahoma ? Open enrollment from January 1 ? February 29, 2012 and from July 1 ? July 31, 2012.

Oregon ? Child-only policies available all year long.

South Dakota ? Open enrollment from July 1 through August 15, 2012.

Utah ? Availability of child-only plans and enrollment periods may vary by insurance company ? A certificate of insurability is required and can be obtained by applying and being denied coverage under the state?s high-risk pool, HIPUtah.

Vermont ? Child-only policies available all year long.

Washington ? Open enrollment from March 15 ? April 30, 2012 and September 15 to October 31, 2012.

States were included in the list above when eHealthInsurance was able to obtain information indicating that there was at least one health insurer in the state offering major-medical child-only coverage in at least some circumstances. This is not a complete analysis of the child-only market, however, and rules and conditions in any specific state may be subject to change.

While the data collected above provides some guidance for consumers in states where child-only coverage is available, rules affecting consumers in specific states and with specific health insurance companies may vary.

  • In some states, child-only health insurance plans may be obtained through licensed agents while in other states they may only be obtained by applying directly through the health insurance company.
  • A qualifying event (such as birth or adoption, the death of a parent, the loss of employer-sponsored coverage, etc) may be required in some states in order to qualify for child-only health insurance outside an open enrollment period.
  • Some states allow insurers to charge child-only applicants with pre-existing medical conditions higher rates than those without pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Insurance companies in some states may be allowed to add a surcharge to the monthly premium for applicants who were previously uninsured.
  • In some states, insurers have opted on their own to accept child-only applications year-round while others may choose not to offer child-only policies at all.

To learn more about the status and availability of child-only health insurance plans in your area, contact a licensed health insurance agent or your state department of insurance.

Tom Hardy, Chris Pine Get Physical In 'This Means War' Clip

Reese Witherspoon tries to decide between the two secret agents in a brand-new clips.

It takes only two short clips from "This Means War" to show you exactly what kind of movie it is. On one hand you have a woman, played by Reese Witherspoon, torn between two men she genuinely likes. It's nothing that far out of line with what you expect from your average romantic comedy.

On the other hand, you have the influence of McG and two of Hollywood's top action stars, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, playing her love interests and secret-agent best buddies. Things, as you can imagine, get a little messy.

As part of "MTV First: This Means War", we debuted two new clips from "This Means War," and they both give a very good taste of what's in store in the movie that hits theaters on Valentine's Day.

The first finds Pine's character, FDR, crashing a date between Hardy's Tuck and Lauren, played by Witherspoon. Lauren goes to the bathroom to collect herself after the surprise encounter, while back out in the restaurant, the former best friends use every ounce of their professional training to beat the crap out of each, destroying the restaurant in the process.

The other clip takes on a much more relaxed tone, showing off the lighter side of the movie. Lauren confides in her best friend, Trish, played by Chelsea Handler, and attempts to make a decision between the two suitors. Unbeknownst to her, both FDR and Tuck listen in.
