Holliston Strikers win gold at President?s Cup

The Holliston Strikers played in the Boston Area Youth Soccer U-11 Girls Division 3 spring tournament recently, along with 15 other teams from the area. After three ?win or go home? games over three weeks, the top two teams met on Saturday, June 16, to determine the champion. The Strikers defeated the Newton Athenas in penalty kicks and won first place.

The tournament started back in May when teams were asked to register for the President?s Cup. The Strikers first game was against the Milford-Hopedale Renegades. The first half was a tight defensive battle, with both teams unable to score. Early in the second half, the Strikers were able to put one in the net to go up 1-0. The team added a second insurance goal in the last few seconds of the game and went on to win 2-0.

The Strikers? second game was against the Medfield Renegades. The Strikers were tight early on but started to loosen up as the game went on and walked off the field at half time with a 3-0 lead. In the second half, the Strikers continued to pull ahead and defeated the Renegades 7-1.

The semi-final round was held in Franklin, home of the Franklin Wildcats. Both teams started out full of energy. It was a tight battle the entire game with the Strikers scoring the first goal and then Franklin coming back to tie the game 1-1.

The second half continued with the same determination from both teams, as the Strikers scored first but the Wildcats tied it up early in the second half. With only 10 minutes left in the game, both teams played stellar defense and it was looking like overtime would be needed, until the Strikers scored with about five minutes left in the game and went on to win 3-2

On June 16, the Strikers and the Athenas met at the Wheelock Fields in Medfield for the finals. The Athenas got off to a quick start when one of their forwards scored in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Strikers quickly followed up with a goal off a direct kick a few minutes later.

The Athenas didn?t give up and scored a second goal about 20 minutes into the half to go up 2-1. The Strikers were able to tie it up again with another direct kick and went into half time with a 2-2 tie.

Everyone expected more goals in the second half but neither team could score in the final 30 minutes of the game or in the 10 minutes of overtime, which meant penalty kicks would determine the champion. This was the Strikers first time finishing a game with penalty kicks, but the girls proved ready to go.

Both teams converted their first penalty kicks. The Strikers missed their next PK, while the Athenas scored (1-2) and it wasn?t looking good for the Strikers, as both teams scored on the next kick (2-3).

With two kicks left and down a goal, the Strikers were able to score on both while the Strikers? goalie was able to stop Athenas? last two kicks for a final PK score of 4-3 Strikers. It was a hard fought battle for both teams but the Strikers were able to come from behind and win the championship on PKs.

Members of the Holliston Strikers included forwards Audrey Givens, Kate Moser, Jayda Shaughnessy and Maggie Young.?At midfield were Brooke Geoffroy, Emma Sawyers, Kylie Warren and Ella Woodward.?The defense consisted of Eliza Altobelli, Abby Curto and Sarah O?Neill.?In goal was Rebecca Stevens.?Lisa Curto and Jeff Geoffroy coach the Strikers.
