Anthony Christou ? Adelaide Concept Artist and Illustrator

After two years of writing Design Montage, I am still completely amazed when incredibly talented people just pop out of the woodwork. In early January I received a wonderful email from Anthony Christou in South Australia describing and detailing his creative practice as an environments concept artist and illustrator. Wow!

The more I emailed with Anthony, the more intrigued (and my inner geek was delighted) by the samples of his work with space stations, game characters and huge, wide fantasy landscapes. I hope you are as impressed as I was, and am.

Anthony is an illustrator and conceptual artist for the entertainment and publishing industries. Growing up with a huge love for anything and everything creative, Anthony went from performing to visual communication. He completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts, began his career as a graphic designer. Several years later, he switched to teaching while practicing his illustration at night.

Anthony has now been a professional illustrator and concept artist for 5 years. This includes working with, video game studios, publishers, authors, comic book publishers and Animation Studios. Recently, CGHUB and The Gnomon Workshop have awarded Anthony for his environment concepts and illustrations.

He?s collaborated on several comics with fellow creatives and is now starting to tackle his own series of graphic novels. Anthony?s creative journey has been varied over the past 15 years of his career, and I can?t wait to see what the future brings for him.

View Anthony?s environments in much larger form on his website, blog, or Facebook.

Anthony?s interview responses are very detailed and I?ve tried not to cut too much, so please read on for the story behind how his career came about.

How have you got to where you are today? Describe a little background on why and how you got started...

Well I was always a creative soul I would draw as a child but also had interests in music, dancing, singing and acting and performed in many productions as a child. I have had experience in acting in high school productions and also in acting groups I performed in stage shows in drama groups. I also was a ballroom dancer and have been in numerous bands in my childhood and teens.

Although I loved acting dancing and playing in bands, I seemed to prefer art and it always was there for me as a release and creative expression.

The great thing about concept art and illustration, is although it can be collaborative, it is for me the most expressive medium. It allows an artist to write a story, create characters and have them perform on a page and act out their stories visually, in comic or illustration, or piece of concept art.

My parents were always supportive of my creative talents. I did well in high school (even in maths) but the passion for Visual Arts and Graphic Design was prominent. My mum made sure that I got through university and at least got a degree.

I started studying Visual Communication, but because I wanted to learn 3D and computer graphics, I switched to Visual Arts. I ended up with a Bachelor of Visual Arts having studied mainly graphic design subjects and majoring in digital media and digital art in my last year. I later went back to university to complete a Masters of Art and Design Majoring in Graphic Design & Illustration. I started my career as a graphic designer in 2000 I had several roles from multimedia designer for a media company, to graphic designer for a print company. I also worked for Diabetes South Australia as the designer for their magazine and other publications and websites.

As I travelled Europe and Asia, it gave me time to take photos and explore my love of photography. I think that is where my love for environment and architecture and all my crazy ideas for designing worlds came from.

Then one day, I bumped in to an old university friend and was offered a chance to teach at UniSA, my old University. While there I bumped into an old student friend of mine, Simon Scales, who introduced me to Concept Art and Illustration. In 2007 I fell in love with that field.

For me concept art and commercial illustration seemed like the perfect balance between graphic design and fine arts. It still also allowed me to explore photography and use photography to inspire my concept designs and illustrations.

While I taught at the university from 2007- until late 2010 I was training myself in concept art and illustration. I also attained a Masters in Art and Design Majoring in Illustration Design. I was still teaching in 2011 graphic design and illustration and started working on research at the university. I did?t enjoy the research as much so I decided to go full time in my own business.

It has certainly been a great learning curve over the last two years to go out on my own, but my illustration and concept art skills have gone strength to strength. It can be very demanding as I presently have all the tasks of a business such as marketing, illustration, training, administration and finances. So far it?s been very rewarding.

In a few words, describe yourself...

I am a hard working, friendly, fun, creative and positive person. I spend many hours in my studio but I also believe in balance and like to spend any spare time with my family and friends.

What are you spending your time on at the moment?

Currently I?m working on a children's book and on a major AAA video game developing small illustrations and some conceptual art. I am not allowed to disclose who the studio is (for confidentiality reasons) but let?s just say that placing them on my CV will definitely be a great honor.

I am also writing my own graphic novel which I?m guessing is going to take me a few years in amongst client work!

Do you have a ritual for getting into the creative mindset? Or a creative process?

I usually wake up in the morning, turn on the music, have breakfast and quickly look at emails. I also like to look at other concept artists, photography and anything inspirational from the latest magazine on art or illustration.

Once I warm up with emails and looking at inspiration online I start sketching whatever project I have on at the time with rough pencil ideas or concept art with photoshop brushes.

I think music is a great inspiration for me and having some relaxing or motivational tunes gets me into the flow and creative mind set. Sometimes if I need motivation I look at how other industry professionals paint from The Gnomon Workshop and it may trigger an idea or give me a technique to start working with.

But I find for me it is just a matter of waking up turning on good music. Even if I do?t have client work to attend to, I usually start painted studies in photoshop of photography such as nature scenes architecture or cool costumes on people. I often also not only do studies of things from real life, but also draw and paint from my imagination at time as a warm up and set myself a goal.

I find entering in contests and having a brief actually allows me to be more creative because I know what I am working towards. Once I start researching images, I can then get into a creative process. My process involves doing studies of collected images, creating thumbnails, making rough concepts then creating 1-2 finished paintings in a day.

What or who inspires you?

The people that have inspired me include my parents, sister and her partner and my nieces and nephew. They have all supported me in life and the great character and strength they have shown me has given me a great inspiration and motivation to keep on fighting for my own dreams in Art and Design.

My other inspiration is my Mentor and long time colleague Rob.C Richardson from Tampa Florida. He has shown me what it takes to be a professional illustrator and conceptual artist. He has also been around for me, to give me inspiration, motivation, strength, and support. I owe a great deal to him as he has given me the discipline I need and also the attitude to always remain humble.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud that I have finally found my true calling that is to basically be a concept artist, illustrator and comic book artist for clients or for my own projects. I am very proud that I have been able to get some clients as I know this field is challenging and I feel very grateful to be working in this field.

I am also proud I have built up a personal resilience to keep on creating despite my financial responsibilities, hurdles and hiccups along the way.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a Doctor of some sort to help people medically. When I realised that my interest and thirst for scientific knowledge was far lower than my love for creative fields such as dancing, acting, painting, photography and writing, I instead embraced my passion for creative skills.

Gaming Nexus - Need for Speed Most Wanted U - Review - by Sean ...

Like most newly-launched consoles, a lot of the Wii U?s early library consists of ports, and as usual their quality can be a bit spotty. I?m not pointing any fingers, but some have been good and others have been obviously rushed, poorly optimized and badly implemented, just to make it to the console?s launch on time. This is why when a spectacular port for the Wii U is released, gamers should, within reason, show their enthusiasm for a job well done. Such is the case for EA and Criterion?s Need for Speed Most Wanted U. The game hit all major platforms late last October, but is finally arriving on Wii U this week.

Like the PS3, Vita and 360 versions, NFSMWU takes place in the open-world city of Fairhaven. The city has a decent variety of locales, with New York-reminiscent bridges and parks, skyscraper districts a lot like LA, beautiful scenic and wooded areas that take equal inspiration from the southwest and New England, and even some areas that actually reminded me of downtown Columbus. Within this expansive amalgamation of American urban landscapes are three types of races, scattered at different points within the city and unlocked in groups as you beat each one.

Sprint Races are simple point A to point B rushes, a single mad dash against opponents where you try to be the first across the finish line. Circuit Races are more traditional multi-lap affairs, where you learn the pattern of a course, suss out shortcuts and try to finish high enough for a good score; naturally, knowing the layout of Fairhaven will grant you more of an advantage on these races. Placing first or second in these events unlocks upgrades that can be instantly applied to the car you won the race with, be it off-road tires or a more potent nitrous boost. Finally you have Speed Runs, where you run a course trying to maintain the most blisteringly high speed average possible, without wiping out or smashing spectacularly into obstacles at breakneck speed.

Tossed into the mix are also Ambush and Blacklist races. Ambush starts you off running from a pack of the game?s annoyingly persistent cop cars. In a mechanic very similar to GTA4, you must escape a flashing circular radius and lose the sight of the cops. As your ?heat? meter increases by ramming cop cruisers and doing other highly illegal things it becomes harder and harder to shake the law, until finally the cops pen you in and arrest you. Obviously the goal of Ambush is to get away as quickly and stylishly as possible, with extra points awarded for disabling or evading the cops but also for gaining and quickly losing a high heat level.

There are only ten Blacklist races in the game and for a good reason: the ?blacklist? is a roster of rival speed demons. If you beat one of these rivals in a one-on-one race?usually with plenty of police in hot pursuit?you?ll unlock this rival?s car. You?ll really need to bring your A-game, and your fastest, nimblest car, to beat these guys. The first time I tried to beat a rival he left me in the dust within seconds, and I lagged behind for the entire race dealing with the nagging cops before quitting the race in frustration. Seriously, don?t challenge any rivals when you are still new at the game?learn your roster of cars and really know what you?re doing before you go after the blacklist.

Luckily all of your unlocked cars, not to mention races, upgrades, customization, multiplayer and other options are available from the in-game Easydrive menu. Controlled with the D-pad, Easydrive makes NFSMWU incredibly accessible with just a few inputs. From here you can repair your car, change its color and manage unlocked upgrades for each vehicle. You also have access to your entire car roster at a glance, which is updated on the fly with any new cars you unlock. You can also check new races, their difficulty and rewards, and set each one as an individual goal on your overmap, all with the D-pad.

This really cuts down on the frustration and lets you compare and contrast the advantages of each car minute to minute. Lose hard in a race? Maybe the answer is a different car you haven?t tried yet. The game?s roster can certainly keep you busy comparing. You can drive everything from the relatively mundane Mitsubishi Evolution X to the beastly Pagani Zonda R, and even a freaking Tesla, with an Aston Martin Vantage, Audi A1 and Maserati in there for good measure. Just joyriding around Fairhaven, getting a feel for all the cars is a blast, especially considering you can smash into things without any real penalty and fix your car instantly, either from Easydrive or at one of the many mechanics dotting the map.

The problem is that a lot of this single player progress?mods, paint jobs, various performance-boosting unlocks?doesn?t transfer over to multiplayer, which is clearly the real main event of the game. You?ll have to unlock most of your upgrades over again in ranked matches. In multiplayer you can drop into a random game pretty quickly which puts you on a playlist of five eight-player events. These are similar to the solo races?sprints, circuits races?but also include stunt trick competitions, and brief races as you drive from one event to the next.

At the end of a playlist you?ll get a tally of everything you scored and unlocked, and a chance to catch your breath and customize before the next random playlist starts. If you?d prefer a more personal touch, you can also design your own custom playlist from any events you?ve unlocked. The Autolog feature keeps track of it all, pasting leaderboards literally everywhere for you to size up your friends. This is particularly amusing in the game?s ubiquitous billboards, which track your speed and distance as you smash through them, and the next time you come across it your friends? Miis are prominently displayed with their stats, daring you to literally smash their records.

NFSMWU?s multiplayer succeeds in the most important aspect of any modern multiplayer game?it replicates that elusive party atmosphere online, fostering rivalries and cooperation in turn, as you?ll be neck-and-neck during a circuit race one minute and trying to organize some crazy rooftop stunt the next. It?s great to have this kind of multiplayer experience on the Wii U so early in its lifespan, and I?m eager to see the Mii plaza light up in the coming weeks. It?s just a shame that you need to sign up for Origin to take advantage of features like Autolog and multiplayer?EA?s online service got off to a shaky, shady start, I know a lot of people who still flat refuse to sign up for it, and frankly I can?t blame them.

The Wii U version adds some welcome new features at least. The game allows for off-screen play on the GamePad, a feature that I hope becomes more or less standard for games where the GamePad isn?t absolutely integral to their gameplay, like ZombiU. More significant is the cooperative Co-driver mode, which lets a second player affect gameplay using the GamePad while player one drives using a Wii remote or Wii U Pro Controller. This mode gives player two a number of options for helping out, such as disabling pursuing cops, swapping between day and night, removing traffic from the roads, changing cars on the fly or navigating with the touch screen map.

This feature can be fun for a while but it left me a bit lukewarm. To be honest the extra features on offer for the Co-driver felt more like debug options that were tossed in at the last minute, just for the sake of Wii U functionality in the port. Don?t get me wrong, any extra features are welcome, I just hope Criterion expands on the idea in any sequels. The Wii U version also offers motion controls, utilizing the GamePad?s internal accelerometers and gyroscopes, but to be honest if you never liked motion controls in Mario Kart (hint: I hated them) you?ll probably like them a whole lot less in a racer as bleedingly fast and precise as NFSMWU.

Presentation-wise, NFSMWU is one of the prettiest, most artful titles on the Wii U bar none. Fairhaven positively shimmers with indulgent sun-halos, reflections and effects, and the world itself is impeccably modeled and textured. It?s the cars, however, that really stand out?the term auto erotica takes on a whole new meaning here as each vehicle, even the Ford pickups, has been rendered in loving detail with some truly jaw-dropping reflections and specular mapping. Of special note are the event intros, which range from range from lurid, almost hedonistic pan n? scans of the cars to what can only be described as arthouse fare. It?s both funny and welcome to see some creative cutscenes in a racing game.

Even more impressive, in my time with the game I never encountered a single framerate hiccup or annoying loading screen?the whole experience was smooth as silk. Considering the Wii U has been plagued with some pretty awful lag, draw distance and framerate issues in almost every port so far, I have to wonder what magic sauce Criterion is using to make such a fast, audaciously gorgeous game run so smoothly on Wii U?or rather, what everyone else is doing wrong.

The sound design is just as good as the visuals. The game?s soundtrack does a decent job at pleasing everyone, with an eclectic selection including The Who, Muse, Deadmau5, Icona Pop and even Green Day. It helps that you can shuffle through the songs with a tap of the left bumper, so if that Skrillex track you hate comes on you don?t have to suffer through it. The sound effects are where the audio portion really shines, and as you?d expect Criterion got each car?s signature sounds perfect, from the eerily silent purr of the Tesla to the powerful yet dignified British growl of the Aston Martin.

In the end Criterion has brought NFSMW to Wii U apparently effortlessly, although I?m sure a great deal of effort actually went into the transition. The game looks and plays better than the previous home console versions, standing shoulder to shoulder with the PC version in terms of graphics, and the added Wii features just sweeten the pot. While many launch window ports on Wii have felt rushed and overall shaky, NFSMWU screams like a V12 roadster doing 160 on the interstate. Whatever Criterion has done, I hope other developers learn how to coax this much raw performance out of the Wii U, and soon.

Of note, however, is that the Wii U version comes with the Ultimate Speed Pack DLC right out of the box. This pack added five new cars to the base game back in December, including the Lamborghini Aventador J and Bugatti Veyron Vitesse. This is a nice addition, but a bittersweet one because EA just announced they won?t be releasing any more DLC for the Wii U version. I?m baffled why they?d put the first DLC pack on the disc and then cut Wii U owners off, but it shows a lack of confidence in the platform going forward. If they?re going to be that cold it makes me wonder why they bothered porting the game to Wii U in the first place, and doing such an excellent job of it too. Hopefully if the game sells well they?ll reconsider.

Regardless, if you?re a Wii U owner and a racing fan you can?t do much better than NFSMWU. It?s one of the console?s few ports that is, for now, superior to most of the other versions, and a master class in how to bring a multiplatform release over to Wii U with both elegance and power. Don?t hesitate to put the key in the ignition on this one.

* The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company for review.

Need for Speed Most Wanted is an expertly tuned and turbocharged port that brings a superior experience to the Wii U. The game is just as good, even better than the other versions, the new Wii U features are fun and best of all it runs like a dream on Nintendo?s new console. The only caveats are the usual compulsory Origin account for multiplayer, and the frustrating fact that for now, EA won?t be releasing any more DLC for this version.

Rex Ryan: Jets not actively dangling Revis

PHOENIX (AP) ? Rex Ryan is like every coach: He doesn't want to see his best player leave.

Yet even while Ryan was saying Tuesday that the New York Jets are not actively pursuing a trade of Darrelle Revis, he sounded prepared to enter the 2013 season without his star cornerback.

Ryan said it's not a foregone conclusion the Jets will deal Revis, who is unhappy with his contract and reportedly has been the subject of discussion with several teams, most recently Tampa Bay. But Ryan acknowledges any team will listen if another club calls about acquiring any player.

"''I'll coach who's here," Ryan said. "On opening day we'll see who that is."

Revis missed most of last season with a left knee injury, but when healthy is considered the best cornerback in the league. He earned a $1 million roster bonus on Saturday.

Ryan didn't say if he expects Revis to be a member of the Jets this season. Revis' contract will cost the Jets $6 million overall if he remains on the roster. In addition to the bonus he got last week, he has two more $1 million bonuses due before preseason begins. His base salary is $3 million.

"I always want all of our players on our team, and sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn't," Ryan said. "It doesn't always happen, I've learned that. I always have a loyalty to our guys I've coached.

"When the first trade thing came up, I connected it to someone that clearly made it up; there was no factual basis. On the first day John Idzik is named general manager and he doesn't even know where his office is, we're trying to trade Darrelle?

"This is all speculation like it's a foregone conclusion. I don't believe it. With that, I am not naive enough to understand several people would be interest in a player like Darrelle Revis."

The Jets can't franchise the 27-year-old Revis next year because of a clause in the contract he renegotiated to get three years ago. He wants to be among the highest-paid players in the league and his current deal doesn't place him at the top for his position.

Revis has never said he wants to leave New York. And the Jets have found the market for him might not yield the kind of compensation package in draft picks ? including a first-rounder ? they feel he is worth.

Highly effective communities of bacteria in the world's deepest oceanic trench

Monday, March 18, 2013

An international research team announces the first scientific results from one of the most inaccessible places on Earth: the bottom of the Mariana Trench located nearly 11 kilometers below sea level in the western Pacific, which makes it the deepest site on Earth.

Their analyses document that a highly active bacteria community exists in the sediment of the trench - even though the environment is under extreme pressure almost 1,100 times higher than at sea level.

In fact, the trench sediments house almost 10 times more bacteria than in the sediments of the surrounding abyssal plain at much shallower water depth of 5-6 km water.

Deep sea trenches are hot spots

Deep sea trenches act as hot spots for microbial activity because they receive an unusually high flux of organic matter, made up of dead animals, algae and other microbes, sourced from the surrounding much shallower sea-bottom. It is likely that some of this material becomes dislodged from the shallower depths during earthquakes, which are common in the area. So, even though deep sea trenches like the Mariana Trench only amount to about two percent of the World Ocean area, they have a relatively larger impact on marine carbon balance - and thus on the global carbon cycle, says Professor Ronnie Glud from Nordic Center for Earth Evolution at the University of Southern Denmark.

Ronnie Glud and researchers from Germany (HGF-MPG Research Group on Deep-Sea Ecology and Technology of the Max Planck Institute in Bremen and Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven), Japan (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Scotland (Scottish Association for Marine Science) and Denmark (University of Copenhagen), explore the deepest parts of the oceans, and the team's first results from these extreme environments are today published in the widely recognized international journal Nature Geoscience.

Diving robot

One of the team's methods was to measure the distribution of oxygen into these trench sediments as this can be related to the activity of microbes in the sediments. It is technically and logistically challenging to perform such measurements at great depths, but it is necessary in order to get accurate data on rates of bacterial activity. "If we retrieve samples from the seabed to investigate them in the laboratory, many of the microorganisms that have adapted to life at these extreme conditions will die, due to the changes in temperature and pressure. Therefore, we have developed instruments that can autonomously perform preprogrammed measuring routines directly on the seabed at the extreme pressure of the Marianas Trench", says Ronnie Glud. The research team has, together with different companies, designed the underwater robot which stands almost 4 m tall and weighs 600 kg. Among other things, the robot is equipped with ultrathin sensors that are gently inserted into the seabed to measure the distribution of oxygen at a high spatial resolution.

"We have also made videos from the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and they confirm that there are very few large animals at these depths. Rather, we find a world dominated by microbes that are adapted to function effectively at conditions highly inhospitable to most higher organisms", says Ronnie Glud.

The remaining "white spots"

The expedition of the Mariana Trench took place in 2010. Since then, the research team has sent their underwater robot to the bottom of the Japan Trench which is approximately 9 km deep, and later this year they are planning a dive in the world's second deepest trench, the 10.8 kilometers deep Kermadec-Tonga Trench near Fiji in the Pacific.

"The deep sea trenches are some of the last remaining "white spots" on the world map. We know very little about what is going on down there or which impact the deep sea trenches have on the global carbon cycle as well as climate regulation. Furthermore, we are very interested in describing and understanding the unique bacterial communities that thrive in these exceptional environments. Data from multiple deep sea trenches will allow us to find out how the general conditions are at extreme depths, but also the specific conditions for each particular trench ? that may experience very different deposition regimes. This will contribute to our general understanding of Earth and its development, says Ronnie Glud.

Pope Francis to get simple coat of arms, ring

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis is mixing his Argentine past with his Roman present to create his new papal coat of arms, while harking back to a pope associated with the Second Vatican Council for the simple ring that he will receive during Tuesday's installation Mass.

The Vatican on Monday released details of the symbols of Francis' pontificate, which in its inaugural days has been marked by his preference for simplicity and aversion to Holy See splendor.

The new pope chose to keep the same coat of arms he had as archbishop of Buenos Aires, and picked the simplest ring out of several models offered him. It is fashioned in gold-plated silver and was once a gift to Pope Paul VI, who presided over the second half of Vatican II, the meetings that modernized the church.

The coat of arms has a necessary addition ? the papal symbols surrounding it: a gilded miter, and crossed gold and silver keys.

The shield itself, in very simple almost modern heraldry, depicts a star, a grape-like plant, and a monogram of Christ at the center of a fiery sun. The symbols represent the three members of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In religious writing, Mary is often referred to as a "star," while St. Joseph is often depicted holding a nard, a Middle Eastern plant. The monogram is the symbol of Francis' Jesuit order.

His motto suggests even more about the root of Francis' message:

"Miserando atque eligendo," Latin for "Having had mercy, he called him," comes from an episode in the Gospel where Christ picks a seemingly unworthy person to follow him.

Francis has stressed the importance of mercy, saying that often people are unforgiving with one another, but that God is all-merciful. "And very patient," he ad-libbed from the window of his studio during his first Angelus prayer Sunday.

In a written explanation of the coat of arms, motto and ring, the Vatican said that the inspiration for the motto stems from the calling Jorge Bergoglio heard at the age of 17, when "he experienced the presence of the love of God in a very special way," and decided to join the Jesuit order.

Francis's official ring will look like gold, but in fact is only gold plated.

Known as the fisherman's ring from the apostle Peter, who was a fisherman and the first pope, Francis's version depicts St. Peter holding the keys of the Holy See. Each pope picks his own ring, which will be destroyed at the end of his papacy.

According to Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, the ring was one of several offered to Francis. Fashioned in the 1960s by Italian goldsmith Enrico Manfrini, it was offered to Paul VI through his private secretary. Lombardi said it is not known if the pope ever used it.

Paul VI presided over the second half of Vatican II, the 1962-65 meetings that paved the way for the liturgy to be celebrated in the vernacular rather than Latin and revolutionized the church's relations with Jews.

Craig Crawford: I'm Getting Married

Yep, it's really happening. In less than three weeks I'll be officially hitched, with the blessing of District of Columbia law, to my man, the great and wonderful David Blank.

While at times the details have been overwhelming, this has been a fun adventure -- but nothing like the 25 years we've already had together. Thanks again to Barack Obama for the inspiration to do this. And here's hoping the United States Supreme Court keeps hope alive!

"At a certain point I've just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." - President Barack Obama (May 9, 2012)

Highly effective communities of bacteria in the world's deepest oceanic trench

Mar. 17, 2013 ? An international research team announces the first scientific results from one of the most inaccessible places on Earth: the bottom of the Mariana Trench located nearly 11 kilometers below sea level in the western Pacific, which makes it the deepest site on Earth.

Their analyses document that a highly active bacteria community exists in the sediment of the trench -- even though the environment is under extreme pressure almost 1,100 times higher than at sea level.

So, even though deep sea trenches like the Mariana Trench only amount to about two percent of the World Ocean area, they have a relatively larger impact on marine carbon balance -- and thus on the global carbon cycle, says Professor Ronnie Glud from Nordic Center for Earth Evolution at the University of Southern Denmark.

Ronnie Glud and researchers from Germany (HGF-MPG Research Group on Deep-Sea Ecology and Technology of the Max Planck Institute in Bremen and Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven), Japan (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Scotland (Scottish Association for Marine Science) and Denmark (University of Copenhagen), explore the deepest parts of the oceans, and the team's first results from these extreme environments are today published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Therefore, we have developed instruments that can autonomously perform preprogrammed measuring routines directly on the seabed at the extreme pressure of the Marianas Trench," says Ronnie Glud.

Rather, we find a world dominated by microbes that are adapted to function effectively at conditions highly inhospitable to most higher organisms," says Ronnie Glud.

Data from multiple deep sea trenches will allow us to find out how the general conditions are at extreme depths, but also the specific conditions for each particular trench -- that may experience very different deposition regimes. This will contribute to our general understanding of Earth and its development, says Ronnie Glud.

Police are investigating what caused a bus carrying a college women's lacrosse team to veer off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and crash into a tree, killing a pregnant coach, her unborn child and the driver.

Players and coaches from Seton Hill University, near Pittsburgh, were among 23 people aboard when the bus crashed Saturday morning. The team was headed to an afternoon game at Millersville University, about 50 miles from the crash site in central Pennsylvania.

Head coach Kristina Quigley, 30, of Greensburg died of her injuries at a hospital, Cumberland County authorities said. Quigley was about six months pregnant and her unborn son didn't survive. The bus driver, Anthony Guaetta, 61, of Johnstown, died at the scene.

Two victims flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center remained there Sunday, but no information was released about their identities or conditions. A woman was in satisfactory condition at another hospital and was expected to be discharged later Sunday. All others aboard the bus were taken to hospitals as a precaution, but almost all were treated and released.

Police couldn't immediately say what had caused the crash. The front side of the bus, which was towed from the scene Saturday night, was shorn away, and the vehicle came to rest upright about 70 yards from the highway at the bottom of a grassy slope.

Both Saturday's game and a Sunday home game were canceled after the crash, and Seton Hill, a Catholic liberal arts school of about 2,500 students, said a memorial Mass was planned for Sunday night on campus. The school is also offering grief counseling to students.

Duquesne University women's lacrosse coach Mike Scerbo remembered Quigley as a warm, outgoing person who immediately impressed him when he hired her to be an assistant during the 2008 season.

Quigley, a Duquesne alum, spent just one season under Scerbo before moving to South Carolina to start Erskine College's NCAA Division II program.

"In that time, I really saw how much passion she had to be a coach, and how much she enjoyed working with the kids," Scerbo said. "She was a teacher, and she wanted to help kids grow and learn, not just about the sport, but about life."

She spent three years at Erskine before taking the top job at Seton Hill for the 2012 season. She stayed in touch with Scerbo, often seeking his guidance and showing up at the Duquesne alumni game.

"She was a very happy person, very passionate about life, about her players, about her job and most importantly about her family," Scerbo said.

Quigley, a native of Baltimore, was married and had a young son, Gavin, the school said.

The bus operator, Mlaker Charter & Tours, of Davidsville, Pa., is up-to-date on its inspections, which include bus and driver safety checks, said Jennifer Kocher, a spokeswoman for the state Public Utility Commission, which regulates bus companies.

The agency's motor safety inspectors could think of no accidents or violations involving the company that would raise a red flag, she said, though complete safety records were not available Saturday.

On Tuesday, another bus carrying college lacrosse players from a Vermont team was hit by a sports car that spun out of control on a wet highway in upstate New York, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said. One person in the car died.

Pets Improve Children's Health | Care2 Healthy Living

To my surprise, studies of the effects of pets on human health and well-being have actually produced a mishmash of conflicting results. For example, some studies show pets lower your blood pressure?in some cases more than drugs do?but other studies found no effect, or even that pet owners have higher blood pressure!

One area where there?s a bit more consistency is children?s health. The presence of pets in the home appears to significantly decrease the risk of infectious diseases in children, including ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and gastroenteritis. But which pets work better?cats or dogs? Find out by watching the video above (starring my furry family!).

Protection from respiratory infections and tummy ailments is one thing, but what about cancer? See my video?Pets & Human Lymphoma.

Of course it?s best if you don?t eat them! In my video?Foodborne Rabies I explore the role the consumption of cat and dog meat may be playing in massive human rabies epidemics in Asia (WARNING: folks may find some of the concepts and images in that video disturbing). Though proper cooking destroys the rabies virus, careless preparation can lead to infection. Cross-contamination of foodborne pathogens during meat preparation is an issue regardless of the species, of course. See, for example, Food Poisoning Bacteria Cross-Contamination, and Unsafe at Any Feed.

In health,
Michael Greger, M.D.

Church urges 6-week break from social media

With that annual period of self-denial leading up to Easter, many try to decide what to surrender. The Russian Orthodox Church ? which observes Easter about a month after Catholic and Protestant churches do this year ? has a suggestion: Give up Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and all the social networks which offer a barrage of information each and every second.

"I don't mean just people who use depraved, entertaining, stupid and empty information," church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin explained to the Guardian. "Even useful information, that relates to our work and well-meaning interests, clogs the brain and soul too much."

Instead of using social media, Chaplin explains, you should give yourself "several hours or 15 minutes of time during Lent to not read curses on social networks, but serious texts, serious art, prayer, unhurried conversation with close ones."

"This is a unique chance to change your life," Chaplin adds.

This isn't the only opportunity we've been given for a spiritual reboot of our tech-obsessed lives of late. In early March, some celebrated the fourth annual National Day of Unplugging, a holiday dreamed up by the artists behind Sabbath Manifesto, a creative project revolving around the search for "a modern way to observe a weekly day of rest."

The holiday lasted from sundown on the first Friday in March until sundown on the following day. It came with a list of principles borrowing from the biblical Sabbath tradition to encourage folks to recharge their metaphorical batteries.

Considering that there are studies suggesting that Facebook can leave us feeling miserable and that various other uses of technology can increase stress ? constantly looking at your email might be making you antsy ? it's no surprise that there are so many movements are urging us to take a break from social media and tech in general.

The only problem is that some of us are far too attached to our gadgets.

"I can't remember the last time I turned my phone off in a situation not involving a software update or a flight," I mused in a Google+ post on Friday afternoon.

"These things have an 'off' switch?" someone replied.

Armenia's top court upholds re-election of Sarksyan

YEREVAN (Reuters) - Armenia's Constitutional Court on Thursday rejected claims by two unsuccessful presidential candidates that a February 18 vote was rigged, upholding the re-election of incumbent Serzh Sarksyan.

The main election body had said there were no violations during the vote that could have influenced its outcome, while international monitors said the ballot was an improvement on previous ones although lacked real competition.

Investors worry over signs of instability in the South Caucasus region, a key transit route for Caspian energy resources to Europe. Violence after the 2008 election that first brought Sarksyan in power killed 10 people.

This time around, Sarksyan won 58.6 percent of votes but his second-placed rival, opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian, asserted that he was the real winner and began a declared hunger strike on March 10.

"The decision is to uphold the federal Election Committee's decision from February 25 on the results of the presidential elections from February 18," said Constitutional Court President Gagik Harutyunyan. The decision cannot be appealed.

Hovannisian, who secured 37 percent of the vote, has staged several peaceful protests in the capital Yerevan over the lost race and has called on Sarksyan to resign.

"We will continue our political fight within the framework of law and constitution until we win," said Hovsep Khurshudyan, spokesman for Hovannisian's Heritage Party.

Armenia, a landlocked former Soviet republic with a population of 3.2 million, has a common security treaty with Russia and hosts of one Moscow's few foreign military bases.

It remains in territorial dispute with neighboring Azerbaijan two decades after a war between the two over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh killed some 30,000 people.
