Local report: Ridgeview grad Carter brings top jump marks to NCAA D-II indoor nationals

Ridgeview graduate Johnny Carter, a freshman at Art Academy of San Francisco, enters this weekend's NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships as the favorite in both the long jump and triple jump.

Carter carries the best marks in the nation in both events into the event in Birmingham, Ala. He has hit 24 feet, 10 inches in the long jump, which will be contested today; and 51-3 in the triple jump, for which the national finals are Saturday.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association last week named Carter its Division II West Region Athlete of the Year.

Carter won the 2008 CIF state triple jump championship at Ridgeview as a freshman and won three silver medals in the two events over the next two seasons.

Snowboarder Anspach 4th

SUN VALLEY, Idaho -- Garces High graduate David Anspach, a senior at Fresno State who is competing at the U.S. Collegiate Ski And Snowboard National Championships, placed fourth in the boarder cross snowboard event to earn All-American honors.

Anspach advanced into the finals where the top four competed head-to-head down the course. Anspach barely missed out on third place, which would have earned him a medal, according to Fresno State coach Ty Alexander. Anspach was ninth in the event at last year's USCSA Championships in Maine.

On Tuesday, Anspach placed fifth in the half-pike.

He has two events remaining: today's slope style event, a jump-heavy event which was postponed from Wednesday because of poor weather, and Saturday's giant slalom.

"He smoked. He kicked (butt)," Alexander said of Wednesday's race.

There are about 500 skiers and snowboarders from about 100 colleges and universities competing, Alexander said.

BC splits in softball

Bakersfield College opened Western State Conference Blue Division softball play with a doubleheader split against L.A. Valley College at BC.

Valley won the opener 10-4 and BC scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the second game 12-11.

The Renegades (2-13) got a three-run homer by Kelsey Best to pull within 11-10 in the second game. After a single and hit batter, BC tied it on Morgan Petersen's two-out RBI single and Brittany Roberts won it with an RBI single. Kassidi Ward hit a three-run homer and RBI single in the opener for BC.
